About the Role

School Learning Support Officers provides support for students with identified diverse learning needs including disability in classrooms and other learning environments under the direction and supervision of a teacher to support the achievement of educational outcomes. This support includes student welfare, health and wellbeing activities as required. In addition School Learning Support Officers may provide specific support for students in the following streams or settings: pre-school, vision support, hearing support, and bilingual. Student Learning Support Officers working in these streams/settings have specific additional duties, in addition to the general duties for School Learning Support Officers that are required to be performed.

Essential Requirements

Working with Children Check Clearance

Completion of mandatory training required by the Department of Education and a willingness to undertake first aid training relevant to the School Learning Support Officer role.

Administration of Medications – training to be provided based on student needs.

Health support training to be provided based on student needs (subject to transition provisions).

Ashtonfield Public School has an enrolment of 527, including forty-seven Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and sixty-four students from a non-English speaking background. The school community has high expectations for student achievement with focus on Explicit Instruction and future focused learning, catering for the individual needs of every student. The school has a proud history in StarStruck, PSSA, debating, public speaking, Tournament of the Minds, concert band, choir, didge group and indigenous dance groups. Student wellbeing is supported by the whole school PBL program. Our school has a strong focus on collaboration and in 2021 the school opened 12 new innovative learning spaces along with the extension and refurbishment of the library, hall and administration areas as part of the School Infrastructure NSW Planning initiative. Our school acknowledges the traditional owners, the Wonnarua people and has an Aboriginal garden and yarning circle. A new support class was established in 2023. The school is supported by a highly engaged and active P&C Association as well as the broader community.
