    The Opportunity

    The Services Business Unit provides a range of commercial innovation services that help businesses benefit from research solutions. The Infrastructure Technologies Program covers a diverse range of scientific and engineering disciplines across a mixture of laboratory and field-based testing, consultancy and certification services, delivering more than 1000 projects to over 700 customers annually. The Program contains the following key capabilities:

    • Fire Science, Engineering and Testing
    • Materials performance and durability
    • Building envelope including acoustic, thermal and water penetration
    • Certification and verification services.

    The Director for Infrastructure Technologies is responsible for a portfolio of multi-disciplinary testing and consultancy services; set the vision, strategy, and tactics for Infrastructure Technologies; and represent the Program's interest in a range of external fora. The Director will be a technical expert who is recognised and trusted by industry partners and relevant government agencies, with strong links to stakeholders.

    The Infrastructure Technologies Program is operated as a commercial centre within CSIRO, generating revenues which allow delivery of a positive operating result. The Director is responsible for the business' operational performance, holding P&L responsibility, including forecasting, budgeting and reporting. The Director must be a collaborative and entrepreneurial leader who has demonstrated commitment to change management in order to evolve the program based on market need, strategy and performance. They will be accountable for the delivery of the Business Unit's overall impact and financial objectives, as well as an active participant in strategy development and implementation.

    Your duties will include:

    • Impact Leadership: Develop the vision, strategy and direction of the Program; identify new opportunities to create a long-term road map aligned to CSIRO's strategy and addressing Australia's national challenges; develop a commercially focused culture of safety, technical excellence, innovation and flexibility; direct the portfolio of projects and external relationships to ensure optimal financial and impact delivery.
    • People Leadership: Attract, develop and retain world class talent to meet current and future needs of the Program; drive 'Zero Harm', lead by example, and actively promote a healthy, safe and environmentally sustainable workplace; actively enact and promote CSIRO's values, and manage people matters proactively in accordance with those values.
    • Resource Leadership: Manage the Program's laboratory infrastructure and intellectual property assets to maximise their use; manage resource and capital allocation to deliver against the Program's goals; develop/implement business cases to support business transformation and growth initiatives; manage the project pipeline – facilitate prioritisation and resource allocation decisions.
    • Operational/Functional Leadership: Develop operational processes and performance goals to optimise the customer journey and maximise productivity. Proactively lead and support change initiatives; ensure best practice governance and management of the Program's quality system, external accreditation and international recognition; manage financial performance of the Program and deliver against annual budgets. Drive the pursuit of external revenue to deliver the operational targets of the business unit.
    • Engagement and Partnership: Develop national and international collaborations / networks to keep abreast of emerging advances relevant to Infrastructure Technologies' services; advocate to Australian and international government agencies in the building and construction sector, extend CSIRO and Infrastructure Technologies' reputation as a trusted partner for testing, evaluation and certification; lead Infrastructure Technologies' public good work through participation and supply of expertise to government agencies, standard setting bodies, and industry associations.
    • Technical Expertise/Science Leadership: Provide technical excellence relevant to building and construction technology; demonstrate credibility within the building sector, actively representing CSIRO at conferences, and events; maintain an expert profile in government agencies relevant to the building and construction sector; engage at senior levels (CEO, Director) to advocate for CSIRO in the national interest.

    • Postgraduate qualifications or significant industry experience, supported by an established reputation and credibility in a relevant discipline.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage high performance teams creating a culture that encourages new ideas, fosters innovative problem solving, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
    • Evidence of successful development and leadership of a commercial portfolio of technical services at the scale of the Program.
    • Evidence of strong industry/government engagement and strategic relationship management that delivers impact opportunities supporting positive and sustainable commercial outcomes.
