About the RoleSchool Learning Support Officers provides support for students with identified diverse learning needs including disability in classrooms and other learning environments under the direction and supervision of a teacher to support the achievement of educational outcomes. This support includes student welfare, health and wellbeing activities as required. In addition School Learning Support Officers may provide specific support for students in the following streams or settings: pre-school, vision support, hearing support, and bilingual. Student Learning Support Officers working in these streams/settings have specific additional duties, in addition to the general duties for School Learning Support Officers that are required to be performed.
Essential RequirementsRutherford Public School is a large regional school in Maitland with a current enrolment of 960 students. The skilled and dedicated staff, at various career stages, strive to provide a balanced and diverse curriculum developing future focused learners in a safe, secure environment. Currently 20% of the students identify as Aboriginal and there is a rich diversity of cultural backgrounds. The school has a strong emphasis on student wellbeing and ensuring a safe learning environment for all. The school underwent a major capital works upgrade in 2019 and is a modern and well-resourced school. Flexible learning spaces and information communication technologies (ICT) are utilised as a tool for learning and living. The school is committed to collaborative planning and curriculum development, where co-teaching opportunities are encouraged and supported. The school has a FOEI of 128 and caters for diverse needs across 38 mainstream classes, including a regional Opportunity Class (OC), and a Special Education Unit that incorporates two (2) Multi Categorical (MC) classes and one Autism (AU) class for students with a diagnosed disability. The successful applicant for the Learning Support Officer (SLSO) position will work as part of a dedicated and professional staff member of the Support Unit.
