Spare a thought .....

We've shut up shop and left behind,

All workplace woes and work-based grind,

Grumpy bosses, clients who whinge,

Stuff them all, we're off to binge,

But as we turn to festive cheer,

Spare a thought for those who can't be here.

Like those who are sick and stuck in bed,

And not too sure what lies ahead,

And what about their carers too,

Those nursing staff who work on through,

This year they'll have slim festive cheer,

Spare a thought for those who can't be here.

Ambos, cops and firies all,

Who stay on duty, lest we call,

Who rush to help when things look grim,

When danger threatens life or limb,

Tragedy's their festive fear,

Spare a thought for those who can't be here.

Then last, not least, lest we forget,

Our troops who meet each terror threat,

Some manning posts in foreign lands,

To keep us safe from threatening hands,

Let's wish them all some festive cheer,

Spare a thought for those who can't be here

So as we sit down for a meal with our loved ones, or race off to jostle in the Boxing Day sales, or prepare for the New Year fireworks and parties .....

The author of the above, Ken Boddie, besides being a sometime poet and occasional writer, is an enthusiastic photographer, rarely leisure-travelling without his Canon, and loves to interact with other like-minded people with diverse interests.

Ken's three day work week (part time commitment) as a consulting engineer allows him to follow his photography interests, and to plan trips to an ever increasing list of countries and places of scenic beauty and cultural diversity.

Thanks, Franci. The sentiment of this poem seems particularly apt this year, here in Oz, with so many firies, mostly volunteers, giving their time, over so many months now, to fight our extensive bush fires.

I don't have a big family just me & 3 more (brother, sister- in-law and 7yo nephew. This is the first Christmas I have not had my family come to celebrate. The outlaws for the first time ever in 15 years, decided they wanted my family with them. So it was a bit odd. A friend left a bottle of champers at my back door. My two closet friends came over for a glass in the afternoon then another friend who has no family came for the same. My family phoned me and so did another friend so the day passed quite well. I didn't cook for Christmas for the first time ever and had a relaxing day. My friend without family and I had a long chat about how to deal with Christmas. We decided that really it was just like any other day and we could choose the best way to think about it and the best thing to do on the day. Thanks for your Christmas poem Ken Boddie It's true we often tend to think of ourselves first or even only think of ourselves. Is the nightcap pic your Santana Oooopps sorry Santa or Santa's Helper audition pic?

And good thoughts go hand in hand with love. I guess what I'm trying to say is by sparing a thought, well thoughts can turn into good deeds too and it makes a person feel the love. I was thinking of those who are a lone without anyone as I read this. I guess depending on the circumstances, we all take in what we know at times. I had 2 friends end up in the hospital over Christmas. One friend is 81 years old and he was all alone. I spent the evening on the phone with him while he was in ER (far, far from me) on Christmas eve and my heart broke because other than being there for him on the phone, I couldn't do anything. I felt bad that he was all alone there. I agree though Ken, and totally understand the premise of your poem, which is beautiful.

Many thanks, Lisa, but, apart from those ill in hospital, not sure if ‘need’ and ‘love’ are the concepts I’m trying to highlight, Lisa. Our emergency services men and women will undoubtedly have their time off to celebrate, but it may not coincide with the celebrations which the rest of us enjoy. All I’m saying is, if we can’t say thanks directly, then let’s at least spare them a thought.
