About the Physical Metrology Branch

NMI's Physical Metrology Branch provides Australia's peak measurement standards for physical quantities. This enables measurements made in Australia to be accepted internationally, which is particularly important for trade.

Our people share their expertise by providing measurement services, from calibration and testing to technical advice and training. We contribute actively to international measurement forums and enhance our capabilities through research and development in line with national and international requirements.

About the Engineering Support Team

NMI's Engineering Support Team provides cryogenic, precision engineering and workshop services to the Physical Metrology Branch and the broader NMI. To achieve peak measurement capabilities meeting the needs of Australian industry, NMI scientists and engineers design, construct and operate leading edge measurement facilities and often need to extensively modify complex commercial equipment. Some of these facilities, including quantum measurement standards, require specialised cryogenic infrastructure for their operation.

To meet these complex requirements, NMI operates state-of-the-art shared workshop and cryogenic facilities, and engages with precision manufacturers in Australia and worldwide. The Engineering Support Team brings together these diverse capabilities and extends them to meet emerging needs.

Our ideal candidate

You are an experienced engineer or technician with broad experience in precision manufacturing, mechanical design and the operation and maintenance of cryogenic facilities. You have experience in the timely and effective delivery of engineering services, in managing stakeholder relationships, and in taking overall responsibility for managing a small team.

You bring to the team:

• A demonstrated ability to build and sustain productive working relationships internally and externally.
• A commitment to safe, ethical, respectful and professional workplace behaviours.
• A demonstrated ability to proactively engage with industry, especially precision manufacturers, to maximise the effectiveness of precision engineering support.
• An in-depth understanding of a broad range of mechanical workshop equipment.
• Demonstrated high-level skills in mechanical design using modelling software.
• Demonstrated high-level skills in the design, troubleshooting and operation of cryogenic facilities for liquid nitrogen and liquid helium.

What you will do

Working under the broad supervision of a section manager, you will:

• Lead a team providing engineering services in support of NMI's delivery of national measurement standards and measurement services.
• Foster consultation and collaboration within NMI to identify innovative and practical engineering solutions and apply sound judgement in developing effective strategies for their implementation.
• Establish and maintain productive relationships with providers of precision engineering and manufacturing services to complement NMI's in-house engineering capabilities.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external users of NMI's cryogenic services and ensure efficient service delivery.
• Mentor and support the Engineering Services team as they deliver a diverse set of services, build new skills and take advantage of new technologies.
• Take responsibility for the maintenance, safety and improvement of workshops and complex plant facilities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
