The Role

Within the Materiel Management function an APS 5 Sustainment & Transition Officer is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex data management work within an integrated workforce.

They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.


An APS 5 Sustainment & Transition Officer will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility.

They will interpret and provide advice within the Materiel Management function area based on legislation, policy and procedures. They will undertake technical research and analysis, conduct reviews and perform administrative support work to achieve results.


The APS 5 Sustainment & Transition Officer will coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members.

They may be a team coach or supervise a team and be accountable to set work priorities, allocate work, and manage workflows and performance.

They are expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on-the-job training within a work unit.


The APS 5 Sustainment & Transition Officer will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond and provide advice on issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes.

They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

The APS 5 Sustainment & Transition Officer will:

  • Be responsible for running reports on logistics databases and interrogating data for business analysis.
  • Develop policies, processes and procedures to support data management activities.
  • Compose reports, documents and correspondence on data management activities.
  • Advise on database management systems to support logistics activities.
  • Build and sustain effective relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities.
  • Work collaboratively, operate as an effective team member and provide constructive feedback.
  • Design solutions to issues impacting on the achievement of desired outcomes.
  • Interpret and comply with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
  • Be accountable to allocate work, resources and tasks and set work area priorities to meet work area outcomes.
  • Coordinate the provision of advice and guidance to others on complex data management activities and tasks.

About our Team

The Directorate of Logistics Systems, Transition (DLST) is located in Canberra and Melbourne, and is one of three directorates within Logistics Systems Branch.
