The company

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), designs and operates a sustainable energy system that provides safe, reliable and affordable electricity and gas today, and to enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.

All Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050, the first step of which is a net-zero energy system.

AEMO are collaborating with industry, and other stakeholders, to engineer electricity grids that can handle 100 per cent instantaneous renewable generation by 2025.

AEMO also plays a significant role in the east coast gas market, which has recently expanded to assessing if there is enough natural gas for customers, including electricity generators.

The role

This role reports to the Manager - Western Renewables Link Delivery with a 'dotted line' reporting relationship to the Manager Consumer and Community and will lead AEMO's stakeholder engagement activities for the Western Renewables Link large electricity transmission infrastructure project in Victoria.

The position will be expected to maintain effective stakeholder consultative mechanisms and relationships to understand the needs and wants of stakeholders, and explain, negotiate and influence AEMO's views on electricity transmission augmentations and associated processes.

This will include development and implementation of relevant stakeholder engagement strategies, including those specifically related to community and landowner engagement.


Responsibilities include:

  • Lead daytoday AEMO stakeholder engagement relating to large electricity transmission infrastructure projects in Victoria specifically Western Renewables Link.
  • Engagement with contractors, Government bodies, regulators, local Councils/authorities, community groups and landowners.
  • Develop and implement stakeholder engagement strategies and plans to ensure AEMO's positions and stakeholder expectations are clearly defined, carefully balanced/ met, including those specifically related to community groups and landowners.
  • Measure the effectiveness of community and stakeholder engagement activities via formal and informal feedback channels and methods (including analysing and sharing insights and results internally).
  • Work closely with Senior Leadership (including the GM Stakeholder Engagement, Manager Consumer and Community and project Steering Committees) to advise of stakeholder issues and recommend strategies and solutions.
  • Facilitate training & mentoring for new and existing team members and support management in planning, resourcing and budgeting as required.
  • Prepare and review collateral / correspondence in a timely manner to ensure alignment with broader stakeholder engagement strategies and plans and for consistency in messaging.
  • Represent AEMO in key stakeholder meetings and facilitate follow up between meetings on key issues to ensure they are closed in a timely fashion.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and improvements to support stakeholder engagement processes, including lessons learnt activities.
  • Undertake preassessment of the materiality of emerging and existing issues to projects / AEMO, investigate/evaluate these issues and recommend potential solutions.
  • Articulate, present and negotiate complex issues to influence desired outcomes including across all levels of management.

About you

Possessing familiarity with the design and operation of the energy market, regulatory frameworks, and electricity transmission in Victoria, you will bring demonstrated experience in the delivery of community and stakeholder engagement on major infrastructure projects.


Additionally, you will have:

  • Tertiary and/ or post graduate qualifications in an appropriate discipline (e.g. communications).
  • International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) qualifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and lead stakeholder engagement plans and processes associated with complex technical, commercial or regulatory issues.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong ability to clearly articulate and present complex issues to influence desired outcomes across all levels of management.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocating, negotiating and influencing outcomes in a complex technical/ commercial/ political environment, often without direct policy guidance or precedents.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic team environment working in collaboration and close coordination with management, senior leaders of the business, wider AEMO business and project teams while ensuring project delivery goals are met.
