The Role

The Ecological GIS Officer position will support delivery of biodiversity and carbon projects primarily in Queensland; however, will also work with the geospatial team providing technical services across the organisation on projects around Australia.


With a pipeline of projects throughout Queensland delivering biodiversity offsets and environmental planting projects with environmental co-benefits, the Ecological GIS Officer will have opportunities to contribute to the technical geospatial components of natural capital projects throughout Queensland and elsewhere in Australia, while delivering industry-leading environmental outcomes to new and existing clients.


Desired experience includes environmental sector managing and maintaining ecological data sets, mapping, undertaking spatial analyses and providing technical reporting requirements on a project-by-project basis.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide GIS support to the Brisbane team, and other teams across the organisation (where required) to assist in the delivery of consulting projects, including in the areas of environmental offsets, carbon projects and environmental cobenefit projects.
  • Assist the geospatial team in the management and maintenance of the organisation's geospatial database.
  • Manage complex datasets and the development and implementation of information management tools and systems.
  • Provide support and manage aspects of new project development, across the company's diverse range of environmental services.
  • Assist in the design, from a desktop geospatial role, of a variety of regular, fieldbased ecological surveys.
  • Contribute technical geospatial information and mapping for various reports, written communications and other project and business development initiatives.
  • Undertake various research, analytical, data management and information collation tasks relating to projects.
  • Maintain positive and beneficial relationships with clients, contractors, government agencies, service providers and staff.

Required Skills and Proficiencies include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in spatial science, GIS or related field with qualifications in additional disciplines such as environmental science, botany, zoology, ecology or related fields highly regarded.
  • Excellent understanding and working knowledge of the ESRI suite of core products, including: Esri ArcGIS Desktop/ArcPro and extensions.
  • Experience in GIS as well as understanding and working knowledge of alternative GIS platforms (e.g. QGIS) will be highly regarded.
  • Ability to prepare maps suitable for incorporating into environmental reporting.
  • Experience in the acquisition, analysis and management of large spatial datasets.
  • Experience interrogating and interpreting environmental field data to prepare ecological mapping and undertake analyses to inform reporting requirements and outputs for projects (e.g. interrogating data collected in the field with desktop data to prepare vegetation community mapping).
  • Ability to manage your own work program with a high level of autonomy and selfdirection.
  • Exemplary organisational skills and ability to work independently to deadlines and budgets.
  • Team player with strong skills, including problem solving, analytical and critical thinking, organisation and written communication.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire knowledge and new skills and work autonomously in a fastpaced environment.
  • Understanding of relevant environmental legislation including the Queensland _Nature Conservation Act 1992 _, _Vegetation Management Act 1999 _, and the Commonwealth _Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 _not essential but will be highly regarded.
