John Fawkner Private Hospital is located in the north-west suburbs of Melbourne.

With 186 registered beds, an emergency department, 5 operating theatres, 12 bed Critical Care Complex and a busy day surgery/endoscopy unit the hospital provides a wide range of services to its community.

The hospital specialises in orthopaedics, general surgery, general medicine, oncology, cardiology, urology, plastic surgery, ENT and gynaecology.

As a CSSD Instrument Technician your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure sterilizing practice standards AS/NZ and infection control are adhered to at all times.
  • Perform duties in all work areas of the department (decontamination, packing, sterilization and loan instruments).
  • Manage a team of 10 staff members
  • Collect, clean and decontaminate soiled equipment used by the operating suite on a daily basis.
  • Load and unload ultrasonic, instrument washers, dryers and sterilisers according to instructions.
  • Inspect and reassemble items as required
  • Prepare, check and package instruments and loan sets to be sterilized.
  • Inform CSSD Manager/Floor Coordinator of any deviation from normal e.g. spore tests, prevac tests, washer tests, ultrasonic tests etc
  • Perform other duties as specified by the CSSD Manager or Peri-Operative Services Manager

Essential Criteria:


  • Cert IV in sterilizing highly desirable or with the option of completing a cert IV on site via correspondence
  • Experience managing a team is desired
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to continuous professional development
  • Computer literate e.g. Tracking systems
  • Ability to take direction from in charge
