About The Opportunity

This is a rare opportunity in SWSLHD to join the Aboriginal Workforce Team and to be part of an innovative approach in influencing and shaping workforce practices for Aboriginal communities.


The Aboriginal Workforce team supports the development and coordination of workforce initiatives for the local South West Sydney Aboriginal community across five key areas: Recruitment, Retention, Career Progression and Professional Development, Community Engagement and Cultural Responsiveness.

The role of the Aboriginal Workforce Development Coordinator supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to gain employment within the Health Sector and engages staff in culturally responsive career development.

This role will have a particular focus on our employment pathways including School Based Traineeships, Traineeships and Cadetships across a broad range of Health Departments.


SWSLHD operates its services on the lands of the Dharawal, Darug and Gundungurra lands and has a rich history of working alongside local Aboriginal communities and our districts Aboriginal Health Unit We are a district that is committed to supporting you grow and develop your skills.

You will be provided with cultural supervision and form part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce.

The position is primarily located at Liverpool with travel across the district to: Campbelltown, Liverpool, Bankstown, Fairfield and Bowral. We are supportive of flexible working arrangements, including work from home.


What you'll be doing

The role of the Aboriginal Workforce Development Coordinator supports the development and coordination of workforce initiatives for the local Aboriginal community across five key areas: Recruitment, Retention, Career Progression and Professional Development, Community Engagement and Cultural Responsiveness.


The SWSLHD Aboriginal Workforce team is based within the People and Culture Directorate and includes the Aboriginal Workforce Manager and Aboriginal Workforce Development Coordinator.

  • This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position.   • Demonstrated understanding of the issues that impact on the recruitment, retention and progression of Aboriginal staff in large organisations and the opportunities to address them.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and negotiate with local Aboriginal community groups, and external agencies to deliver culturally responsive services
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead or contribute to quality improvement and professional development of Aboriginal people in collaboration with Non-Aboriginal stakeholders
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in project management within an Aboriginal community context including project design, implementation, review and evaluation
  • High level oral and written communication skills including reports, briefs, training resources and presentations
