- Be a highly regarded government lawyer with a minimum of 5+ years post admission experience in managing a legal practice.
- You will have strong credentials in collaborating with key clients and legal service providers to deliver high-quality advice to senior leadership of the Department.
- Bring a sound understanding of how to manage a legal team and deliver legal services in accordance with the Commonwealth legal framework (including the Legal Services Directions, and PGPA Act) and in a manner that results in outcomes that are consistent with the veteran-centric focus of the Department.
- Have experience in applying a strategic lens to manage complex issues with department and whole of government implications and help steer them to the most appropriate course of action.
- Be an astute manager of resources to ensure the Branch is well-placed to respond to workload surges.
- Embrace technology solutions and process improvements to manage caseload volume and deadlines, and reporting.
- Have experience in building high-performing teams and being the type of leader that engenders a positive team culture.
- Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).

Description
General Counsel, Dispute Resolution Branch leads a specialist branch within the Legal and Audit Division. This specialist in-house legal practice supports lawful implementation of the Department's objectives by advising on the management of legal risk as well as providing legal advice, litigation, internal reviews and dispute resolution services.
Duties
The General Counsel, Dispute Resolution Branch is responsible for leading a geographically-dispersed Branch, to foster strong working relationships with colleagues to support the effective management of legal risk across the Department. Our ideal candidate will:

Where a non-ongoing position is offered, the role will be filled for an initial specified term of up to18 months.
A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created which may be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months.
