BUILDING STRONG STRUCTURES WITH WEAK MATERIALS - THE POWER OF PAPER
The self-supporting and weight-bearing paper bridge was created completely out of paper without using glue, screws, or any other fixings to keep the sheets of paper in place.
The bridge was a temporary installation by British environmental artist Steve Messam, built on the principles of traditional stone bridge building methods.
Perhaps humans can learn from this kind of structure. Even we are weak, we could become stronger if we stick together.

Preston, not only with a sheet of paper. A visionary also starts with scribbles on a napkin. 😊

Still, I value more that piece of paper where the design was made, before any of the construction sheets were used…

It is said that a visionary starts with a single sheet of paper. This artist than just added 21,999 more sheets.

Mohammed, I've just realized I didn't respond to your comment. Only a few of us comment on the new beBee regularly. That's why every comment merits a response.
I couldn’t have put it better myself. Here is about science coupled with the intellectual capability of a human being. 🤗

So true. I've analyzed a dataset once based on concrete strength. Not as straightforward as I had thought. Cheers

Zac, indeed. Also, many times it is not about implementing great ideas, but the execution of these ideas. Concrete is such an amazing material, but improper construction methods and lack of maintenance can affect its durability.

Franci, what happened in Florida is the worst nightmare for every engineer and contractor. As far as I read, it is suspected that a sinkhole carved out by saltwater intrusion might be the cause. It affected foundation piles and concrete columns in the garage consequently. So far, we can only speculate. Detection of the cause is crucial for the remediation of other similar structures. I can only say that building maintenance is of vital importance, which is often neglected. My condolences to the families.

So true! I wonder how many disasters could be avoided if all these great ideas would be put into good use for the benefit of the whole…

Ken, I shared a short version of the previous post because lately, I have no time for writing as before. Still, I visit beBee as much as I can and enjoy engaging with a few enthusiasts on this platform. :) Thanks for explaining to my readers more about arches. 😊 Put an arch in compression, and it’s rock-solid. As for the Golden Arches, I have read they actually represent something quite different from what the name suggests.

Yep, and if it has words written on it, it's even more powerful, on another level…

A good example of the power of paper, Zacharias. Paper is a dense material. Fibres in the paper are tightly packed with no air pockets making it denser and stronger than oak.

It's mirable science coupled with intellectual capability of human being!

I remember your previous short post on this, Lada. Of course, now we can save any length of post in the groups.
But, oh the ARCH, its simplicity yet brilliance. Its place in early ‘arch-i-tecture‘ surely rivals the discovery of the wheel. Without the brilliant arch there’d be no arcades, vaults and viaducts … and no domes. And then there’s the Colosseum. So, to explain to your readers, the traditional series of small stone blocks used extensively by the Romans, Egyptians, Babylonians and Greeks in the not-so-simple arch doesn’t really differ much from a few reams of paper, in that both are strong in compression but weak in tension. Makes me wonder if McDonalds studied the history of architecture, as their ‘Golden Arches’ are the foundation of the fast food industry. 😂🤣😂

I remember once examining first hand the power of paper when I tried to pull apart two books whose pages were tangled like a bunch of super thin sandwiches. Not as easy a task as it seemed!

I shared one of my short posts from the old beBee. Paper is considered a weak material, but it's actually strong.
