The Role

The Rocket Motor Testing Specialist Firing Officer will undertake static firing of rocket motors, including the preparation of motor hardware and be the specialist firing officer for static testing activities.

They will identify requirements for, and manage static firing rigs and associated hardware to ensure it is fit for purpose and available for static firing activities.


Responsibilities:


  • Be the specialist rocket motor firing officer for DSTG for the safe conduct of static rocket motor test activities and train new firing officers for rocket motor testing.
  • Actively participate in the risk management of rocket motor static firings and develop associated risk assessments and safe operating procedures for firing of rocket motors.
  • Manage rocket motor assets and associated hardware for firing activities, including their transportation, storage, and disposal.
  • Prepare rocket motor assets for firing activities, including modification, installation of components, thermal conditioning, and undertaking prefiring checks.

About our Team

The Rocket Motor Testing Specialist Firing Officer is part of the Propulsion Technology Integration and Assessment (PTIA) Discipline within Missile and Space Propulsion (MSP) Group that is part of Sensors and Effectors Division in DSTG.

MSP Group conducts research and provides advice on weapon propulsion technologies to enhance Defence capability.

The Group maintains expertise in areas of weapon propulsion systems and technology, gun and rocket propellants and rocket motor surveillance and lifting.

The Rocket Motor Test Capability in the PTIA Discipline represents a strategic asset for Defence as it provides an ability to ensure the safety and suitability for service of the ADF's guided weapons inventory and also enables demonstration of DSTG led advanced propulsion systems for future weapon concepts.


We are looking for a motivated team player with excellent attention to detail who has engineering and/or technical experience working with explosive ordnance.

To success in this role, as a Technologist/Technician you must be able to demonstrate the following:


  • Maintain engineering and technical standards and currency in the science & technology disciplines related to Weapons Systems capability.
  • Provide support to liaise and collaborate with stakeholders in order to recognise their priorities and develop technological solutions that meet their needs and expectations.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate and effective techniques and methods to achieve outcomes.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced team members, build and sustain positive relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities.
