The Role
Are you a dynamic, innovative, resilient professional who would like to play a leading role in a team driving historic investment in Australia's current and future land capability?

If so, this role is for you.

Land Capability Division's eight capability programs are undergoing a period of significant change as Defence acquisition transitions to a more programmatic, integrated and holistic approach to capability development.

This requires innovative thinking, professionalism, change management and stakeholder engagement skills and an ability to achieve results.

To help us achieve this, we need professional, innovative, resilient Deputy Directors to work closely with the Program Directors for each of our Programs.

The Deputy Director is responsible for the effective and efficient management of the Program on behalf of the Program Director.

This role deputises for the Program Director in their absence, oversees all Program planning and support functions, and ensures sufficient resources to deliver the Programs strategic objectives.

The Deputy Director/Assistant Director will:

  • Lead the delivery and implementation of the Director's strategic intent, including the development of the Program strategic narrative aligned with this intent
  • Lead the development and delivery of key program artefacts including the Program Strategy, Program Governance Plan, Program Management Plan, Program Structure and Workforce Plan, and Business Management Plan
  • Leads the management of program budget, operational functioning, program schedule, and program level risks & issues
  • Oversee the accurate and effective communication of the program strategy and key program artefacts to all relevant stakeholder groups, including industry where appropriate, nested within LCD's broader strategic communications campaign
  • Oversee the implementation of the Directors strategic intent by providing support and guidance to other Program staff
  • Maintain contemporary knowledge of the program deliverables and represent the Director at forums the Director is unable to attend
  • Maintain contemporary knowledge of Defence strategic direction and supporting artefacts; legislative, financial and administrative frameworks; and government decisionmaking processes and regulations, to ensure programmatic compliance.
  • Facilitate the Land Capability Division Chief of Staff Branch in accessing information from the program to feed into divisional and grouplevel deliverables
  • Analyse program gaps and opportunities, establish options in consultation with relevant stakeholders, and provide recommendations to the Director.

About our Team

The two land capability program teams these positions relate to are professional, multidisciplinary integrated teams comprising ADF, APS and contractor workforce, working together under their respective Program Directors.

These programs are organised under two Branches - Aviation Branch and Future Land Warfare Branch, within Land Capability Division, which is part of Army Headquarters.

We are recruiting to newly created positions in two of Army's eight capability programs, supplementing those that already have deputy directors:

  • Aviation Program
  • responsible for world class Battlefield Aviation projects
  • Robotic & Autonomous Systems explores, coordinates and develops disruptive technology that equips Army to be Future Ready.
The merit pool will also potentially be used for similar future vacancies in other land capability programs.

Land Capability Division is the core of Army's Land Capability System and is responsible for delivering and integrating the fundamental inputs to capability that generate and sustain Australian military capability in the Land Domain.

The Division operates in accordance with the One Defence Capability System and includes the activities conducted to modernise and sustain the Army and build its future capacity.

As Army is currently undergoing an historic reinvestment in land capability, this is an exciting time to join the Division.

We are looking for dynamic individuals with the drive and commitment to manage complex tasks in a busy and changing working environment.

We will assess your suitability for the role against the following selection criteria:

  • The personal drive, resilience and resourcefulness to achieve results in a dynamic environment.
  • Welldeveloped leadership skills that will allow you to lead a complex, integrated team made up of APS, ADF and/or contractor staff.
  • The ability to build and sustain internal and external working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • The ability to think strategically and innovatively and drive change to align actions with broader organisational needs.

Experience with finance/costing, project management (including scheduling), logistics, project document writing and/or the One Defence Capability System would be beneficial but are not essential criteria.
