Description
Senior Geologist
Permanent Appointment
Are you passionate about the resource sector and looking for the next step in your career?
Do you have a desire to be involved in Statewide resource assessments and prospectivity analysis in an evolving and fast paced landscape?
The Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) provides a genuinely exciting, flexible and friendly work environment, which offers its people a range of benefits, including flexible working hours and working at home to help support you and get the best results possible for our community.
Here at DEMIRS we value diversity and appreciate every individual's perspective, bringing together a diverse and inclusive workforce to drive innovation and success. The Department supports a safe, fair and responsible future for the Western Australian community, industry, energy and resources sector. We lead with integrity, deliver on commitments and strive for excellence.
The Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division is responsible for the facilitation of investment through the provision of geoscience data and products and for setting strategic resource policy. The division manages the Abandoned Mines Team, pre-competitive geoscience acquisition and interpretation in addition to the Exploration Incentive Scheme including the co-funded drilling program. The division also provides information and products to support the approval of mining tenements and petroleum titles and other related legislative compliance processes.
The Land Use Planning Branch helps to shape and inform land use planning policy and outcomes. It aims to maintain access for exploration and development of the State's mineral, basic raw material, petroleum and geothermal energy resources while assisting with the delivery of State land use objectives. This involves industry consultation, multi-commodity geological assessments and regional prospectivity studies.

The role
As a Senior Geologist in the Land Use Geoscience team, you will utilise your technical and industry knowledge/experience in conjunction with good judgement, research and analytical skills, to undertake geological assessments and prospectivity analysis to inform land tenure decisions and mitigate land use conflict across the State. Additionally, you will provide geoscientific advice on resources and significant mineralisation for mining lease applications, and mining compliance matters relating to mineral resources, mineral prospectivity and reported mineral exploration activities.
Your success in this role will be underpinned by your ability to provide professional geoscientific advice on mineral, petroleum and geothermal energy exploration and development to ensure continuity of community benefits from Western Australia's geological endowment. Your in-depth knowledge and experience in multi-commodity mineral exploration and prospectivity analysis, will see you excel in this position. Your ability to work collaboratively and positively interact with a range of stakeholders, problem solve and navigate complex land use and planning matters related to land and resource access will also be essential for this role.
A significant portion of this role is responsible for managing the Department's land estate commitments under Native Title Settlement Agreements including undertaking industry consultation, resource assessments and prospectivity analyses to protect resources from incompatible land tenure changes/uses. This position has two direct reports and a role in scientific leadership to maintain and improve Land Use Planning's spatial databases and business systems.
We offer comprehensive training, complemented by the support of an experienced team of geologists and a highly committed leadership group focused on driving positive change and lasting benefits for the State. Additionally, we are dedicated to fostering your professional growth, which includes provisions for attending conferences and workshops to further enhance your expertise.
Please refer to the Job Description Form (JDF) attached for further information regarding the position, including any specific requirements, capabilities and pre-employment checks which will be assessed as part of the selection process.
