Overview
Join the Orthoptic casual pool at Women's and Children's Hospital Outpatient clinics run Monday - Friday, with shifts offered between 8.50am - 5.30pm, note that community screening clinics may require earlier start times due to travel to offsite clinics.
The orthoptists play a key role in the day to day running of the paediatric ophthalmology department at Women's and Children's Hospital.
Service provision includes assessment of; age-appropriate visual acuity assessment utilising logMAR and crowding/confusion bars, eye position/squint assessment, eye movement assessment and recording, binocular function testing, intraocular pressure and optic nerve functions by using a wide range of orthoptic and ophthalmic testing modalities.
Orthoptists will also routinely perform ophthalmology imaging including using Humphrey Fields (HFA3), Zeiss Cirrus OCT, Zeiss Clarus widefield photographs and slit lamp imaging (Haag Streit IM900).
Orthoptists at WCH are involved in a range of outpatient clinics;- Consultantled clinics orthoptists perform workups for patients with a wide range of conditions. Orthoptists are expected to have enough clinical knowledge to perform appropriate investigations prior to the attendance of medical staff.
- Orthoptic Review clinic orthoptists assess and manage patients with amblyopia, refractive error, strabismus or conditions that may affect visual acuity or development.
- Orthoptic Imaging clinic orthoptists perform a range of imaging assessments including visual fields, OCTs, fundus photographs for patients attending consultant or registrarled clinics on another date
- Refraction clinic working alongside the Fellow, orthoptists assess patients who are in the final phase of amblyopia or refractive error treatment and work with the Fellow to decide who should be discharged to local optometrists.
- Outreach Vision Screening clinic orthoptists attend CaFHS centres in the northern suburbs performing secondary vision screening on children who have failed their Kindy Vision Screening check
- Orthoptic Triage clinic orthoptists assess patients who have been referred into WCH, to gain more specific information about any eye condition present.
Applicants with limited experience in paediatric ophthalmology, or significant periods of time since they last worked regularly in this area, will be appointed at AHP1 level.
At the AHP2 level you be expected to work with limited professional direction and high levels of competence within paediatric ophthalmology.
