Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Advanced Trainee to join the Medical Oncology team.

What you will be doing:


  • You will attend and participate in outpatient clinics and training courses. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and other clinical meetings, as well as be involved in departmental quality assurance activities.
  • Management of outpatients with common malignant diseases at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse and Dubbo Base hospital.
  • Management of outpatients with rare malignancies at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, including development and adherence with assessment and management plans, ongoing reviews at MDTs, and appropriate communication between specialists at different geographical sites.
  • Inpatient consultations at Dubbo Base Hospital, Chris O'Brien Lifehouse and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
  • Oncall responsibilities at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse.
  • Development and participation in regular telehealth consultations, and outreach clinics beyond Dubbo.
  • Triage and development of appropriate management plans for newly presenting rural patients, in collaboration with the rural nurse coordinator, local GPs, counsellor, and supervising oncologist.
  • Institution, coordination and chairing of the weekly Dubbo oncology unit multidisciplinary meetings; participation in tumourspecific MDTs at Lifehouse.
  • Clinical trials: Participation in regular Lifehouse clinical trials clinics, appointment as a subinvestigator on relevant clinical trials, and involvement in regulatory aspects of clinical trials.
  • Training to junior medical officers and medical students.
  • Conduct of a research project relating to rural health services research.
  • Participation in educational activities conducted by the Sydney LHD medical oncology network.
  • Participation in oncall roster at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse.

The medical oncology unit at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse is supported by the biggest clinical trials facility in New South Wales.

We take a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, bringing together a concentration of expertise, including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.


Where you will be working:

You will be employed by Sydney Local Health District.

You will work at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse (a private not-for-profit institution co-located with Royal Prince Alfred hospital), and also work at Dubbo Base Hospital 2 days per week.

Flights and accommodation are provided to travel from Sydney to Dubbo on Monday morning and return to Sydney on Tuesday afternoon.

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Experience as a medical officer in a rural hospital, preferably with experience in a rural oncology unit (desirable but not essential).
  • 12 months experience as an advanced trainee in medical oncology (desirable but not essential).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Successfully completed the FRACP written and clinical examinations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team.
  • Demonstrated experience in research studies and teaching.
  • Minimum 3 years of postgraduate experience.
