About the Role


The City Growth and Development Division at City of Port Phillip is looking for a people focussed, outcomes centred Manager of City Planning and Sustainability to lead a highly motivated and capable department to influence the future of our inner urban municipality.


Reporting to the General Manager City Growth and Development with a team of seven highly capable direct reports, this role is responsible for Council's urban renewal and precincts, transport, urban design, city policy and strategy, sustainability and climate change functions.


Guide the growth and evolution of Port Phillip, as a liveable and vibrant city that has a sustainable future, is resilient to climate change and is well-connected, through the provision of strategic leadership to the City Planning and Sustainability department as well as across the organisation.


Duties:


  • Lead the City Planning and Sustainability Department of 50+ staff and its services, projects, strategies, and initiatives.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the organisation, work collegiately across Council and contribute to a constructive organisational and customer service culture.
  • Ensure that legislative and regulatory obligations that relate to functional responsibilities in the Planning and Environment Act 1987, Local Government Act 2020, Climate Change Act 2017 and related legislation are met.
  • Oversee Council's strategic planning function and the management of the Port Phillip Planning Scheme and Municipal Planning Strategy, to ensure an effective framework of local policy and controls to manage growth and support healthy communities.
  • Coordinate Council's involvement in Fishermans Bend urban renewal
  • Drive innovative and strategic responses to climate change

Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated senior leadership and management experience in a midsized to large organisation
  • An outstanding leader with a track record of building high performing, multidisciplinary teams that are aligned, engaged and collaborative, lead cultural change and contribute to broader organisational leadership and culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to take the initiative, drive change and implement innovations to deliver Council priorities within a highly political and complex environment.
  • Superior interpersonal, negotiation, persuasion, communication and presentation skills
  • Tertiary qualifications in a related field
