The Role

As the EL 1 Assistant Director Freedom of Information (FOI), you will work with considerable independence and be accountable to perform and achieve very complex management and coordination of Freedom of Information requests made by the public.


The enquiry management and governance team is the entry point for all individuals seeking information from Defence under _the Freedom of Information Act 1982_ (FOI Act), lead Defence's FOI training program, and the business management function of the FOI Directorate.

As such, the Assistant Director FOI will require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.


The Assistant Director FOI will perform an important leadership role and be responsible for developing strategies to manage requests for access to documents, based on high level decision making and judgement.

They will provide strategic FOI advice to senior management and stakeholders across all Groups and Services.


About our Team

Within the FOI Directorate, the Assistant Director FOI leads a small team responsible for managing FOI enquiries from the public and consultations from other government agencies, the Directorate's governance and business management responsibilities, and managing of Defence's FOI education and training programs.


The team work in close collaboration with the Group and Service stakeholders in Defence, to manage FOI requests made to Defence.


You will demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • A leader with experience building a team and developing individuals, you are comfortable providing coaching and mentoring your team.
  • Experienced with stakeholder management, comfortable engaging and collaborating with a variety of stakeholders while building and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Have a positive and inclusive approach to working as part of a team in a large and complex organisation.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You thrive in a fast paced environment where you're given latitude to manage multiple tasks which also require prioritisation.
  • You enjoy making things happen and learning as part of what you do.
  • Strong leadership skills, the ability to plan, lead, and manage resources and achieve strategic outcomes. Effective people management skills are essential.
