The Bureau's Hazard Preparedness and Response - National team are seeking a motivated and experienced Policy Advisor to join the Disaster Risk Policy team.

This team is responsible for collaboration and strategic engagement with key Commonwealth and national bodies and agencies including providing secretariat for several national committees in the emergency management sector and the coordination and development of relationships within the Disaster Risk Reduction community;

The successful applicant will be a flexible self-starter who enjoys a diverse range of work and has strong written and verbal communication skills, project and stakeholder management experience and who can work to deadlines.

Applicants must be team players who can work collaboratively, influencing stakeholders and supporting colleagues to solve problems and achieve objectives.

Depending on skills and experience, the successful applicant for these roles may:


  • Support strategic engagement with key Commonwealth and national bodies, to increase the Bureau's influence in the national emergency management landscape;
  • Provide secretariat support to national coordination and governance bodies;
  • Coordinate and contribute to Bureau submissions to inquiries, and other processes, relevant to its roles and responsibilities;
  • Undertake analysis and provide strategic policy advice, particularly around national and international best practice and initiatives, relevant to disaster mitigation;
  • Be involved in projects implementing incremental and transformational enhancements to the Bureau's hazard warning services as required.
