Fractional/Fixed Term 3.5 hours per fortnight - (Funded 6 months)

  • This position invites the opportunity for a Consultant Geneticist to develop subspecialty expertise in renal genomics and contribute to research in a new area for genomics mainstreaming

The Clinical Change Project:
'Scaling up genomic medicine:
a new model of care for equitable and sustainable delivery of genomics in nephrology' is a two-year collaborative project involving the Melbourne Genomic Health Alliance (MGHA), Melbourne Health, Monash Health and Austin Health


The role:


  • This program will embed genetic counsellors in neurology, neuropsychiatry or aged care teams to provide genetic will examine a new approach to the delivery of renal genomics where larger numbers of kidney specialists are empowered to request genomic tests with support from resources and genetics specialists, as needed. The EFT outlined will support the new model of care through upskilling of two 'genomic champions' (a nephrologist and renal nurse) in nephrology, to improve genomics utilisation in the department. Nephrology will be supported with a genetic counsellor and geneticist, who can also upskill. The aim of this new model is to help promote appropriate mainstreaming of genomic testing in nephrology and identify barriers and enablers to this new model of care.
  • The clinical geneticist will be required to support nephrologists during multidisciplinary team meetings and be a point of contact for both genetic counsellors and nephrologist in the mainstreaming project.
  • Contribute to MDT (up to 1 hour weekly) to provide advice to nephrologists on site as well as those at other centres
  • Coordinate statewide activities with the other clinical geneticists in this role
  • Provide advice and casebased education in line with recommendations and resources by working group
  • Attend and participate in educational meetings in renal genetics
  • Contribute to quality assurance and research activities of the Clinical Change Project

About you:


  • Must hold or be eligible for registration with the Medical Practitioners Board of Australia
  • Fellow of the Australian College of Physician in Clinical Genetics
