Monash Health is excited to announce a new position for a Research Analyst / Data Scientist working within the Paediatric Emergency Research Group.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Professor of Paediatric Emergency Medicine to support a research project spanning Monash Health, Peninsula Health and Eastern Health:

  • Perform analysis and data mining to identify trends, patterns and associations in data;
  • Perform targeted analysis in order to answer specific research and/or qualityimprovement questions;
  • Develop statistical models which can be used to improve performance, operations and business processes;
  • Work closely with team members to understand data sets and the data warehouse environment;
  • Liaise with staff at different levels including executives, managers and clinicians.

Monash Health is the largest public health service in Victoria, employing over 18,000 people across a range of specialities.


Monash Health Emergency Departments treat over 150,000 emergency patients a year at Monash Medical Centre Clayton campus, Dandenong Hospital and Casey Hospital.

Patients have access to a full range of treatment options, including intensive care.

The role is funded for four days per week for 18 months (completing June 2024).


About You:


  • Advanced knowledge of R scripting language;
  • Ability to build statistical models using R;
  • Understanding of common statistical methods and algorithms;
  • Excellent T-SQL skills with the ability to write complex queries against relational databases;
  • Excellent Excel skills with a solid understanding of features such as pivot tables, charts and slices;
  • A good understanding of business intelligence and data warehousing concepts;
  • Knowledge of Power BI desirable.

What You Need:

  • Excellent T-SQL skills with the ability to write complex queries against relational databases and join multiple tables;
  • Advanced knowledge of R scripting language;
  • Ability to build statistical models using R;
  • Understanding of common statistical methods and algorithms;
  • Knowledge of other statistical tools such as SPSS, Python or Azure Machine Learning;
  • Excellent Excel skills with a solid understanding of features such as pivot tables, charts and slivers;
  • A good understanding of business intelligence and data warehousing concepts
- _ Knowledge of Reporting Services (desirable);_
- _ Knowledge of Power BI (desirable)._

  • Demonstrated data analysis experience;
  • Communication skills including well developed written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to liaise with staff at all levels;
  • Analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Health experience & understanding of clinical information systems (Cerner FirstNet).
