About the role:


The IT Portfolio Manager - Security Specialist role is a critical function in Victoria Police to ensure new technology or services selected for deployment are secure and fit for purpose given the critical data and functions supported by the organisation.


The role requires a combination of security and people skills to ensure appropriate engagement occurs across various stakeholders in reviewing systems or services, and that timely advice can be provided to both technical and non-technical stakeholders to appropriately manage risk or implement appropriate security controls for chosen systems.

It is expected the role will help identify, assess and manage security and risks which are likely to cause business impacts to critical policing functions, such as unauthorised disclosure of information, lack of information integrity and loss of information and system availability when required by frontline members.


The Security, Information and Privacy Division (SIPD) is responsible for the strategic direction, governance of processes, provision of advice, stewardship and promotion of protective and cyber security, privacy, information management and records management.

The IT Portfolio Manager - Security Specialist role is responsible for:

  • Lead the security engagement with nominated technology portfolios, commands and division representatives to ensure security is well articulated and delivered as a key requirement for technology and information management outcomes.
  • Provide advice to the organisation on cyber security, policy and legislative matters related to the secure management of information and system and act as the SME to investigate and research appropriate security controls for new initiatives or related activities.
  • Maintaining a contemporary information security assessment process, updating and validating control sets with SIPD based on current best practice (this includes facilitating annual review of the VP subset of security controls against changes to the ISM and VPDSF controls and internal control changes for Information, Communications & Digital Technology (ICDT) managed systems)
  • Understanding the information sources available that input into the process
  • Working with the wider organisation to understand new vendors/solutions and scope the appropriate security review / controls based on the solution outcomes and data managed
  • Operating the process to conduct multiple security assessments and providing the resulting artefacts, including System Security Plans (SSPs) and System Security Risk Summaries (SSRS)
  • Validate the accuracy or security designs and ensure the build of solutions matches noted design outcomes prior to go live
  • Manage security risks noted for reviewed systems and provide insights and support to drive a positive security risk culture
  • Identify process improvements and efficiency where appropriate.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification or an industry recognised certification in a relevant discipline such as information and cyber security, technology or business is highly desirable.

Requirements and relevant information:


  • One (1) x fulltime, ongoing position available.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo National Security Vetting (NV1), achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head. To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
