    What to anticipate

    At Baker McKenzie, we recognize that the shift from university to legal practice can pose challenges. We offer our summer clerks a thorough orientation program, incorporating legal, technical, and soft-skills training sessions, to facilitate a seamless transition. Our training regimen is crafted to help you maximize your clerkship and position yourself for triumph.

    We engage with our clerks prior to their commencement to identify the areas of practice they are keen on exploring. We arrange the rotations for our summer clerks based on these preferences, whenever feasible.

    In Sydney, our primary practice groups consist of:

    • Banking & Finance;
    • Corporate (including Mergers & Acquisitions, Private Equity and Capital Markets);
    • Construction;
    • Employment & Industrial Relations;
    • Media;
    • Tax; and
    • Technology Communications & Commercial.

    Above all, as a summer clerk, we want you to taste the life of a graduate and junior lawyer at Baker McKenzie. Hence, right from the beginning, our summer clerks engage in real tasks. You will interact with our Australian and international clients through client meetings, shadowing, research, and other daily undertakings within your designated practice group. Additionally, you will have the chance to partake in pro bono assignments and community service projects.

    Our summer clerks collaborate closely with our attorneys, receive guidance from a supervising partner, and benefit from the additional support of an experienced associate 'buddy'. With the Firm's strong emphasis on empowering its individuals to learn, evolve, and attain superior results, you can expect exemplary leadership, coaching, and mentoring.

    You will enhance practical and legal skills through our specialized clerkship program and by engaging in Firm-wide/practice group gatherings. Throughout the clerkship, our partners and associates conduct professional development sessions. These sessions will enable you to (among other things):

    • expand your network within the Firm;
    • hone your legal and commercial competencies;
    • acquire insights into our practices, clients, and Firm arrangement;
    • become familiar with our Pro Bono scheme, Community Service initiatives, and Inclusion & Diversity domains; and
    • learn about our global training and work avenues.

    We will also furnish you with opportunities to network with colleagues across the Firm – via our 'speed networking' scheme and various social gatherings with your buddy, our partners, and our attorneys.

    The majority of our graduate positions are extended to former summer clerks. We also extend former summer clerks the chance to undertake paralegal roles with the Firm.
