About the role

The Coordinator Community Development - Community Strengthening plays an important role in creating well connected, resilient and healthy environments in which the community can thrive and achieve a strong sense of belonging.

This role leads the Community Strengthening business unit and manages a range of programs and activities that support our community groups, local organisations, peak bodies and volunteers.


The Coordinator Community Development - Community Strengthening manages the strategic and operational aspects of community grants, awards and recognition and capacity building of community groups across Glen Eira.

The Coordinator also engages with the community on current and emerging community development issues and opportunities.

  • Key responsibilities include:_
  • Coordinate the delivery of the entire Community Grants Program, Citizen of the Year Program and Recognition Programs including promotion and marketing, guidelines and forms, reporting, acquittals, audits and other required processes.
  • Supervise Community Strengthening staff to ensure activities, programs, and events are effectively planned and implemented in accordance with relevant funding agreements and Council budget, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Coordinate Council's Community Strengthening role in community facilities and settings.
  • Provide administrative support, reports and implement actions for relevant Council Advisory Committees in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensure the effective delivery and review of Council's Community Funding Agreement Program including reporting, maintaining relationships, auditing programs as required and processing requests for variations.
  • Undertake assessment of all new or proposed services, programs or funding arrangements so they are appropriately aligned with Council corporate and strategic plans and risk management policies/guidelines.
  • Contribute to the leadership of the Community Development Department including a Business Plan and a calendar of community development events and activities.

About you
You are proactive, agile and resourceful.

You will be results focused and have an ability to prioritise, communicate effectively, work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

You will have a strong sense of accountability for the work of your team and take pride in delivering high quality outcomes.

You will bring to the role your community facing experience having worked in the field of community development, community grants, volunteering or community services.

Possessing excellent communication and writing skills, you will be results driven, flexible in approach and build quality relationships at all levels as you support the Council to deliver projects that service the long-term needs of our community.


The following is also required:

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field of community development, health promotion and/or a related field.
  • Experience in the management and roll out of community projects, strategic plans and initiatives
  • Comprehensive understanding of community strengthening issues and Local Government's role in planning and delivering services, programs and activities for its community.
  • Experience in supervising staff, setting priorities and objectives to ensure staff operate in the most efficient way possible within the resources available.
