About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for an organised and highly motivated person to be an integral part of the Community Development department.

The Diversity and Inclusion Officer will be responsible for providing support and advice on a range of diversity and inclusion initiatives.


The position will provide focused support to multiculturalism and inclusion of our culturally diverse community, supporting and implementing the priority actions of our Multicultural Advisory Committee.

The role will provide input into strategic policy, planning and development, collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, advocacy, community and capacity building activities to increase accessibility, inclusion and equity for the whole community.

The Diversity and Inclusion Officer may focus on aspects of diversity and intersectionality including but not limited to:
Aboriginality, ageing, All Abilities, ethnicity, religion gender identity, and sexual orientation.

  • Other responsibilities include:_
  • Build partnerships with the aim of implementing Council's diversity and inclusion commitments with external organisations
  • Build the capacity of staff across Council to effectively implement diversity and inclusion actions and strategies in accordance with Council endorsed priorities and relevant legislation.
  • Participate in relevant industry, regional and local network meetings to support partnership work and delivery of best practice diversity and inclusion initiatives in Glen Eira.
  • Participate in and support relevant internal and external committees and working groups to ensure a collaborative and coordinated approach to diversity and inclusion.
  • Support development, review and reporting and implement deliverables from the following Council plans and strategies in accordance with identified priorities:
  • Community Wellbeing Plan and annual Action Plans
  • Council Plan and annual Action Plans
  • Reconciliation Action Plan
  • Gender Equality Action Plan
  • Other plans that may be developed across the Community Development Department

About you
You are proactive, agile and resourceful.

You will be results focused and have an ability to prioritise, communicate effectively, work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

You will bring to the role your community facing experience, having worked across a broad range of diversity and inclusion portfolios.

Previous or current experience in local government is desirable.


You will also have:

  • A tertiary qualification in the social sciences, planning, health promotion or community development disciplines with relevant experience or a tertiary qualification with some relevant experience.
  • Welldeveloped written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in the development of project plans, specific experience related to diversity, accessibility, equity and inclusion will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in partnership development and stakeholder engagement, including the ability to support and inform shared projects and initiatives.
