About the role:

Based in our Sydney CBD office, you will be joining a fast-paced, engineering consultancy.

You will enjoy operating with an appropriate level of autonomy, reporting to the Payroll Manager you will be engaging with staff across all of our 10 locations in Australia.

This will be a pivotal role to help support the success of the whole team and the broader business. At Northrop, our people are our most valued resource. Our Finance Team play a key role in the success of our organisation and our strategic and operational efficiencies.

The team works closely with all Northrop employees, and our external stakeholders, to ensure accurate information can be provided across all areas relating to finance and accounting.

The Payroll Officer will be a key support role in our Corporate Finance team. This position is responsible for providing an efficient and effective payroll service to all employees.


Day to day responsibilities include:


  • Take control and maintain the payroll and accounting systems. This includes updating and maintaining employee records, change of employee conditions, salary sacrifice arrangements, and setting up of new starters.
  • Prepare and update the payroll timesheet spreadsheet weekly with upcoming manual adjustments.
  • Preparation of termination calculations for review.
  • Prepare fortnightly payroll for review. Including processing timesheets, manual adjustments, annual leave, long service leave and timeinlieu.
  • Prepare fortnightly employee reimbursements for review.
  • Prepare fortnightly PAYG payment for review.
  • Process quarterly Superannuation payments.
  • Assist with monthend reporting. Includes preparing monthend journals, payroll and employee expense reimbursement balance sheet account reconciliations,
  • Monitor and ensure policies and processes are adhered to.
  • Prepare monthly leave liability reports.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports as needed.
  • Actively maintain strong key relationships with all teams.

What we're looking for?

  • Technically competent in payroll and capable of interpreting and understanding payroll legislation
  • Demonstrated experience in payroll and knowledge of awards, and superannuation requirements
  • Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills (e.g. proficient with pivot tables, VLOOKUP, IF functions, basic macros, conditional formatting)
  • System knowledge of Deltek Vision or Attache is desirable.
  • Strong problemsolving and analytical skills with a proven ability to troubleshoot
  • Highly organised with time management skills and the ability to multitask
  • Process driven with a high level of attention to detail and accurate data entry skills
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate with team members, stakeholders and clients
  • Work effectively to meet deadlines, both independently and as part of a close team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate professionalism and objectivity in all work matters
  • Maintains discretion and confidentiality
