Permanent - Full Time- Location: Canberra- Job Category: Arts, Culture,Information Management, LibraryThe National Film and Sound Archive's (NFSA) Collection Management Section ensures the responsible management of the National Collection of four million audiovisual, documents and artefact works relating to film, sound, television and radio captured in a diverse range of analogue and digital formats.

The Section requires several Collection Management Officers to carry out a variety of collection management tasks relating to the preservation, security, and accessibility of the national collection.


Ideally, we seek someone with a keen interest in the history of the audiovisual industry in Australia and a firm understanding and practical knowledge of collection storage and handling principles, the archiving of cultural collections, and collection management database systems.


As a Collections Management Officer at the NFSA, you will be responsible for ensuring requests for access to the NFSA's collection are met in a timely and accurate fashion, that the collection is handled and transported in a professional manner that minimises potential damage and that the collection is stored in accordance to established standards to ensure its preservation for perpetuity.

You will assist and support in the monitoring of collection capacity; accessioning; collection relocations and assist with warehouse and sorting room activities.

In addition, you will assist with collection stocktakes and collection care tasks. The role also supports requests from Property & Security and external contractors.


The position will involve considerable manual labour (primarily handling, packing, and transporting collection items) and a current ACT C Class driver's licence is essential as is a clean driving record.


Effective time management partnered with good communication skills, drive, and a flexible approach to working in a dynamic and challenging environment are key attributes to achieving the expected outcomes of this exciting role.


About the Team
The positions are situated within the Collection Management Section of the Collection Branch. The Collection Management Section undertakes a broad range of operational activities ensuring the National Collection is preserved and accessible.

The position is based at Mitchell, Canberra but you will regularly be required to communicate with staff across all NFSA sites and commute to NFSA headquarters at Acton to work and liaise with staff located there.

The position is full time 36.75 hours per week. Collection Management Officers are regularly required to start work no later than 8:00am each day.


2 x ONGOING and 1 x NON-ONGOING POSITIONS ARE AVAILABLE


Under supervision, and as a member of a team, undertake Collection Management team activities including: the handling, retrieval, packaging, return and relocation of collection material and assist with Collection storage programs.

These activities are to be conducted in accordance with established archival practices and procedures. Security and care of the Collection is paramount to any tasks undertaken.


Job Details

Under direction, undertake the following duties:

  • Assist with retrievals and associated collection management activities including despatch of collection items for external loans, and when required, assist with collection relocations.
  • Assist and support the Collection Storage Masterplan and undertake collection assurance tasks.
  • In accordance with museum standards, examine and prepare collection material for long term storage, update/create accession records using the collection management database and carry out collection care tasks.
  • Provide onsite support for the NFSA's Property & Security team.
  • The safe loading and transportation of collection items, in a variety of commercial vehicle types.
  • Undertake and assist in a range of collection management tasks and projects as directed.

  • Handling and management of collection materials in an archive, museum or library environment and the associated movement, record keeping and storage practices for heritage material.
  • Ability to work constructively as a member of a team in a client service environment. Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Organisational skills and the ability to patiently perform set tasks on a routine basis with consistently highquality results, while working with limited supervision.
  • An understanding of the practices and principles relating to Occupational Health and Safety and Workplace Diversity. Ability to operate in a participative and consultative work environment.
