About the role

Be responsible for leading and supporting the City Transport and Place Design team on key projects, developing strategic solutions, developing and implementing transport and urban design policies and plans and championing Council's focus on sustainable transport options and high quality public realm outcomes in our activity centres and transport corridors.


  • Day to day duties include but not limited to_:
  • Providing high-level input and advice on strategic transport planning and urban design opportunities, working closely with several of the Council's other departments.
  • Preparing reports for the Manager City Futures on strategic transport planning and urban design/public realm placemaking matters, policy and advocacy as required.
  • Identifying and leading the development of programs and projects that bring about positive change to the function and appeal of the City's activity centers and transport corridors
  • Collaborating with other teams, identifying and advocating for public transport and active travel improvements and funding based on adopted strategies of Council
  • Managing and committing annual operating budgets and minor capital works budgets and delivering our commitments within each financial year.
  • Leading a team of transport planners and urban designers to achieve great outcomes for the community

About you
You have experience in leading teams and facilitating a productive and accountable team environment.

You will possess sound knowledge of transport planning amongst local government along with vast understanding of state related transport/urban design challenges and opportunities.

You will be a passionate, innovative leader and highly motivated to deliver change. Your political acumen and relationship skills will hold you in good stead for this important role in Council.


The following is also required:

  • A degree in Traffic Engineering, Planning, Urban Design or relevant qualification.
  • Substantial experience in transport planning, traffic engineering, planning and/or urban design.
  • Successful experience in leading the development and implementation of complex policy, strategies, and design plans in a government setting.
  • Successful experience of leading change in a highly political setting.
  • A demonstrated history of achievement, strong project management capabilities and the desire to achieve positive change.
  • A current Victorian Driver's License.
