About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual interested in science or health, to join the Epilepsy Research Centre at the Melbourne Brain Centre in Heidelberg.

You will have the opportunity to contribute to world-leading clinical and genetic epilepsy research, working alongside a large and highly cohesive team led by Laureate Professors Sam Berkovic and Ingrid Scheffer.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Attend private and hospital outpatient clinics to recruit study participants
  • Conduct facetoface and telephone interviews with participants and family members about their seizure history
  • Perform blood sampling (training provided) and source relevant medical information
  • Coordinate assigned local, national and international collaborative projects
  • Analysis of clinical and genetic data

Who We Are Looking For
You are someone who excels in interpersonal skills and establishing connections with a diverse range of adults and children. You will have meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and precision when collating and organising study data.

Once trained, you will have the opportunity to independently run your own projects with mínimal supervision, requiring a high degree of responsibility, self-motivation and organisational skills.


You will also have:

  • A tertiary degree in biological or medical science and an interest in genetics
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate tactfully and discreetly on matters related to health
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to undertake highquality written analysis, such as literature reviews
  • Proficient computer skills word processing, databases, use of the internet

  • This position requires the incumbent to hold a current and _valid Working with Children Check_ to ensure the University provides a safe environment for everyone._

The Epilepsy Research Centre is a large cohesive research group investigating the genetic basis of the epilepsies.

Led by Laureate Professors Sam Berkovic and Ingrid Scheffer, the Epilepsy Research Centre is world-renowned in epilepsy genetics with a track record of over 25 years in this field.

Working with a multidisciplinary team, including neurologists, researchers, nurses, and bioinformaticians, they have forged strong research partnerships both within Australia and internationally.

By identifying genes and understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms, their research contributes to better diagnosis and the development of precision medicine therapies.

With over 20,000 participants in their studies, they continue to uncover more genetic causes, describe the phenotypic spectrum, and improve the lives of individuals with genetic epilepsy.
