About the Role

As the Policy and Innovation Lead, you will be a key member of the Biodiversity Council executive team, investigating and consulting on current and emerging policy, initiatives and innovation affecting biodiversity.


Drawing on your expertise and excellent communication skills, you will collaborate and negotiate with a variety of key stakeholders including governments, First Peoples, NGOs, philanthropic organisations, universities, scientists and experts in the biodiversity, conservation and environmental sectors to drive the change agenda of the Biodiversity Council.


Responsibilities include:

  • Researching and delivering incisive analysis of policy initiatives and developments in the biodiversity, conservation, climate change and environmental sectors to the Biodiversity Council executive team and Expert Councillors
  • Identifying, cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders including universities, governments, First Peoples, NGOs, philanthropic organisations, scientists and experts in the biodiversity, conservation and environmental sectors
  • Identifying strategic opportunities to collaborate with Expert Councillors, other experts, First Peoples, NGOs, governments, universities, local communities and others to achieve impact and turn those opportunities into effective action
  • Directing and/or advising Expert Councillors in synthesising research, reports, analysis and other materials to support the Biodiversity Council's strategic intent and work plan

About You

You will have experience in a similar role with a demonstrable ability to work with and/or within universities across diverse disciplines to achieve tangible outcomes.

You will have a passion for Australia's biodiversity and the capacity to understand and rapidly master biodiversity knowledge and its implications for policy, First Peoples, business and community.

You will also have experience in a start-up environment, and ability to work flexibly in a small team and manage constantly shifting priorities.


You will also have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience in conservation, environmental and/or climate change policy, including an ability to quickly and creatively identify and realise opportunities to advocate for and achieve change
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement and in communicating clearly and effectively with a broad range of groups/people to deliver concrete outcomes
  • Proven experience in influencing strategic decisionmaking
  • Operational experience in complex environments
