The Role

Melbourne Water is the Floodplain Manager for the greater Melbourne area.


Collaborating with local government partners, industry consultants and stakeholders across Melbourne Water, this role will support the delivery of the flood information program.

The role will coordinate the program across all stakeholders and ensure it is delivered to appropriate technical standards. The role will also work across the major infrastructure program, assessing and reviewing impacts to the floodplain.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Supports the delivery of the regional flood modelling and mapping program to ensure critical information is available to manage flood risk.
  • Supports the protection of the floodplain through infrastructure development.
  • Works with Melbourne Water's customers in local government to deliver a joint program of flood information.


  • Supports the Principal

  • Flood Modelling to develop appropriate governance and standards for managing flood information.
  • Develops, implements and maintains positive customer and stakeholder relationships.
  • Provides timely advice as needed on flood information and data governance practices.
  • Contributes to a positive team culture, consistent with Melbourne Water's behaviours.
  • Supports the development of a generative safety culture.
  • Creates business cases to justify investment, tenders and awards contracts, project manages projects ensuring financial forecasts are kept current based on best available information

About you

You will have had some exposure to flood modelling and wanting to take the next step in your career where your project management, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills will be further developed enabling you to enact greater change.


You will also bring a continuous improvement focus to your work and seek out innovative and new ways of working to better the flood modelling and mapping capability of Melbourne Water.


Ideally you will possess:

  • Tertiary qualification in engineering, project management, or related discipline.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and capability to collaboratively deliver programs
  • Appreciation and understanding of flood management practice and principles.
  • An understanding of the use and operation of hydrological and hydraulic software and GIS software is beneficial.
  • Project management knowhow.
  • Experience in developing effective networks in a diverse and complex multiagency delivery environment.
  • Experience in managing data and information.
  • Good problem solving and analytical skills which add value to business and customers.
  • Extensive coordination, prioritisation and time management skills to deliver on longterm objectives while managing daytoday challenges within tight timeframes and work unsupervised.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with all stakeholders and to prepare and deliver information to an audience in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in actively providing a healthy, safe and supportive work environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to selfawareness, selfreflection, and ongoing personal development.
