This role will be provided with both clinical and cultural support and will work in a culturally centred trauma informed approach across the program areas.


This role will hold small clinical load to ensure time is invested in strong community connections and providing genuine cultural consultation to ensure the cultural integrity of the care we provide for Aboriginal clients is strong.

About you:

  • This is an Aboriginal Identified position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community.
  • You will have completed a Bachelor Degree in a health related field or completed ECAV qualification pathway
  • Graduate Certificate in Human and Community Services (Interpersonal Trauma).

What you'll be doing

The Aboriginal Counsellor - is a key member of the New Street service which is part of the broader Violence, Abuse and Neglect (VAN) service stream. The position will demonstrate high level clinical expertise and provide therapeutic services to children and young people aged 10-17 who have engaged in sexually harmful behaviour. They will also provide therapeutic interventions to family members in order to strengthen and enhance individual and family functioning.


The counsellor will provide consultation, guidance and education to internal and external stakeholders in the areas of risk assessment, recidivism and safety planning in a variety of settings such as school, recreation, employment and travel.


As part of a multidisciplinary health care team, this role will provide quality services to children and young people to meet their health and wellbeing needs and will assist their colleagues to develop a deeper level of awareness and understanding to communicate sensitively and work effectively with Aboriginal people engaging with VAN Services.

Working towards cultural humility is a responsibility of all Violence Abuse and Neglect staff*.


The position is part of a small CCLHD team that is also part of the NSW network of services providing opportunities to engage and connect with the Aboriginal workforce state-wide and locally.

Cultural and clinical supervision, support and training is provided.


This role will lead community development and capacity building for the team with local Aboriginal communities to best facilitate ongoing communication and service delivery.
