About us


The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is responsible for providing in-house legal services across the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) and to the Attorney-General, as First Law Officer, and multiple other Ministers.

The team leads the delivery of legal services on commercial and regulatory matters for DJCS.

OGC is looking for an experienced manager with strong technical legal skills, stakeholder management skills and leadership qualities to co-manage the team.


About the role
Lead and supervise a team of lawyers in the operation of government in commercial and regulatory matters and projects.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Providing solutions-based legal advice on issues relevant to the government, ministers and the department, both individually and as a leader of a team of solicitors.
  • Managing multiple complex and sensitive matters for various clients across the whole of DJCS.
  • Supporting and working collaboratively with the executive and leadership team.
  • Developing strong relationships with other DJCS groups as well as other departments, agencies, external law firms and stakeholders.

About you
To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A proven ability to lead teams that can deliver sophisticated, authoritative and concise advice on complex legal matters arising in the operation of government in commercial and regulatory matters and projects. Including complex commercial, employment, infrastructure, IT, construction, regulatory and project related matters.
  • Technical legal skills with the ability to analyse complex legal issues, interpret legislation and develop accurate legal solutions with mínimal supervision.
  • Experience providing legal advice at a senior level in relation to commercial transactions or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in, or knowledge of, Victorian government and Cabinet processes.
  • Qualifications/Requirements_
  • Applicants must be admitted, or eligible to be admitted, to practice as a legal practitioner in Victoria.

Upon commencement of employment with the department you will be required to provide evidence that you have an up-to-date vaccination status within the timelines specified by the department into the DJCS Service Portal.

This includes evidence of
three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine required by the department (from time to time).


Acceptable evidence includes:

  • COVID19 digital certificate (available via your myGov account)
  • Your immunisation history statement (available via your myGov account)
Other documentation outside the above will not be accepted as evidence of having received your COVID-19 vaccine doses.
