About the position


This position will require the successful incumbent to work three days a week onsite at the Olivia Newton -John Cancer Research Centre.

Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI) are looking to establish a successful grants strategy to ensure La Trobe University and ONJCRI retain their rankings in health and medical research.


As such a requirement has emerged for a co-located position to be established in the Research Grants and Transformation team to drive the increase of grant income with both the MRFF and NHMRC across both the institutions through collaborative projects.


Duties at this level will include:

  • Lead the ONJCRI grants office to provide Institute-wide pre and post-award support, ensuring a high standard of research grants support for researchers through the entire life cycle of the grant.
  • Working closely with the CEO, ONJCRI develop and implement a successful grants pipeline strategy.
  • Undertake research development to identify major proposals and build strategies to help guide investment in developing these proposals to a successful highly competitive submission.
  • Lead the development and coordination of the bid development framework, including strategic advice to the research team, grantsmanship, organising grant writing assistance, university contributions, final review and editing to professional standards, internal and external approvals, and final approvals.
  • Working with the Research Grants and Transformation team lead and manage the development and submissions of grants from ONJCRI by providing ongoing training and planning workload in the grants team's 90day planning cycle.

Skills and knowledge required:


  • A relevant postgraduate degree, extensive grant development and management experience, or postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent alternate combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated track record in working with researchers and partners to develop successful category 1 schemes.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with a range of Australian competitive grant schemes
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop, manage and report on a pipeline of proposals, including moving proposals through earlystage definition and qualification to proposal development, submission, success and establishment.
  • Skills and experience in complex stakeholder management during proposal development and post award setup of grant funding.
  • Established and effective networks with major funding bodies and with peers in other universities and or Medical Research Institutes.
