ESL Teacher


Program Area:
Community Engagement


Purpose / Objective:

Facilitate English as second language classes and/or one-on-one tutoring to help people seeking asylum develop their literacy and English language skills


Reports to:

Community Participation Lead

Days and hours required per week:2 hours a week. Face to face/ Remote (Online)


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Plan lessons, prepare teaching materials and teach weekly classes remotely online over Zoom/Google Meet or face to face.
  • Teach English to assigned students in a group and/or oneonone setting.
  • Maintain accurate records and share them with Community Participation Lead including class attendance roll, content covered, material used.
  • Liaise with the Community Participation Lead and Volunteer Program Team Leader for the scheduled times of the classes and the students involved.
  • Inform Community Participation Lead or Volunteer Program Team Leader if any issues arise during the sessions.
  • Participate in team meetings and debriefs.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all people seeking asylum.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possession of an ESL diploma or certification from an accredited institution
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Previous experience in teaching or tutoring vulnerable communities is preferred, but not required

  • Demonstrate respectful and welcoming behaviour with all people at ASC in culturally appropriate ways
  • Undertake a NSW Working with Children Check prior to commencement and ensure it is uptodate
  • Support a childsafe organisation by undertaking screening for suitability to work with children and vulnerable people and to comply with relevant state/territory legislative requirements
  • The Volunteer will receive a thorough induction and orientation to their role and to ASC
including a detailed Workplace, Health & Safety briefing.
