    About the Department

    An agency charged with the responsibility for leading Australia's response to climate change and sustainable energy use, and protect our environment, heritage and water.

    About the Role

    The Environment Protection Division is responsible for a wide range of regulatory and non-regulatory programs which protect the environment from harmful effects that may be generated throughout the product life cycle. From working with industry at the product design stage to identify ways to phase out chemicals of concern or design for recyclability, to end-of-life recycling; our focus is on finding ways to better manage Australia's waste, protect air quality and prevent ozone layer depletion, and govern the use of industrial chemicals.

    The Waste Regulation and Stewardship Branch is responsible for different aspects of waste regulation and waste stewardship, including hazardous waste, waste plastics, waste tyres, waste glass and waste paper.

    The Hazardous Waste team is responsible for assessing permits for international hazardous waste movements, and is responsible for our international engagement with the Basel Convention, and regional engagement with the Waigani Convention.

    The focus of the work for the next 12 months is the domestic implementation recent amendments to control nonhazardous e-waste, due to come into effect on 1 January 2025.

    Duties

    • undertaking research and analysis to inform, develop and support evidence-based policy and legislation.
    • understanding and applying legislation, regulation, and policy frameworks
    • preparing and progressing domestic policy implementation of the e-waste amendments
    • maintaining productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders on policy and operational matters relating to e-waste, including coordinating regular stakeholder meetings

    Skills and Qualifications

    • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
    • Strong influencing skills to build and maintain a wide range of stakeholder relationships
    • The ability to work effectively across the department and with our State and Territory colleagues
    • Experience with RIS and international treaty making processes is also desirable.

    What's on offer

    The successful candidate will be offered an APS6 hourly rate contract, notionally through to January 2025. Locations across Australia considered.

    As this role is with the Federal Government, only Australian citizens that hold a baseline clearance or a willingness to obtain, will be considered for this vacancy.
