Division Responsibilities
The Legal and Assurance Division is the Department of Health's internal legal practice

delivering legal services across the wide spectrum of the Department's activities. The

Department's lawyers work in an exciting, dynamic and intellectually challenging

environment providing legal services including in areas of law such as administrative law,

commercial law, corporate governance, employment, information law and torts. Legal and


Assurance Division comprises:

  • Advice and Legislation Branch;
  • Corporate, Commercial and Litigation Branch; and
  • Corporate Assurance Branch.
The legal branches are the first point of contact for Departmental staff requiring legal advice

and assistance. These branches are responsible for delivering a range of high quality, client

focused legal services to Portfolio Ministers, the Executive and other senior officers of the

Department on a broad range of complex legislative, program and policy issues affecting the

portfolio. The legal branches strategically manage legal risks to enable the Department to

deliver its strategic and corporate priorities and ultimately, its vision.


Branch Responsibilities
The Corporate, Commercial and Litigation Branch provides strategic legal advice to the

Secretary, the Executive, and the line areas of the Department, on matters of litigation,

dispute resolution, support for the response to COVID-19 including the vaccine rollout,

commercial law, privacy, data sharing, employment law and corporate governance

(including statutory appointments).

The branch is comprised of the following sections:

  • Commercial Law;
  • Governance and Employment (including COVID19 Vaccine Legal);
  • Legal Policy and Practice Management;
  • Litigation; and
  • Privacy Law.

Section Responsibilities
The Legal Policy and Practice Management Section is responsible for management of the

daily practice operations - including reporting, for the Division. The team provides support

to the Division and, in particular, the Chief Counsel by undertaking the following:

  • Developing business plans and risk management strategies;
  • Analysing business practices to find and realise efficiencies in the delivery of legal
services and manage the contracts with the legal services providers ensuring the

delivery of cost effective services;

  • Coordinating and preparing responses to whole of government legal issues;
  • Coordinating and producing legal services reports for the executive as required;
  • Working closely with the Office of Legal Services Coordination (OLSC) within the
Attorney-General's Department;

  • Managing the recruitment and accommodation requirements for the Division;
  • Managing the financial and procurement processes for the Division; and
  • Ensuring compliance with Legal Services Directions and the Public Governance,
Performance and Accountability Act 2013.***
Key Responsibilities
The position reports to the Legal Practice Manager (Legal EL2) and provides assistance to

coordinate and manage the administrative functions of the division. The position manages

two staff members within a small team of administrative staff who provide support services

to the division including:
accounts management, contract management, assistance with

external legal services procurement, internal and external recruitment, and legal

professional development programs. The position also assists the Legal Practice Manager

with the budget, business planning, legal analytics and reporting, and legal projects as

required


Key responsibilities are to:
