Our purpose in NSW Education is to prepare our learners to lead rewarding lives as engaged citizens in a complex and dynamic society. This is important because the learners of today are the foundation of a prosperous Australia tomorrow. We cover the end-to-end lifelong learning journey through early childhood education, the public school system and vocational and tertiary education.

To support all learners to thrive, we must ensure we are one of the best education systems in the world. This means building a system focused on learner outcomes, that has community confidence and that also offers a great place to work. Explore the Department of Education website for more information.

    About the role

The CIO oversees the planning, implementation, and management of our technology infrastructure, systems, and applications, ensuring their reliability, security and scalabillity.

Joining as the CIO, you will set cultural, strategic and technical direction for a geographically dispersed IT Directorate of around 1500 colleagues. You will be the face of the IT Directorate in building strong relationships with your internal peer groups and customers within the Department. You will drive the day-to-day service delivery and change agenda for the technology function in line with the organisation's objectives including enterprise architecture, project delivery, life cycle management of core platforms and applications and innovation. This role is vital to the continued success of our organization, dedicated to quality, integrity and an inclusive working environment.

The CIO is a valued member of the Executive Leadership group in the Department and sits on the Operational Executive Team. The CIO is required to proactively engage and provide advice to a range of key stakeholders and have a transparent, collaborative partnership-based approach.

The Department has a recently agreed digital strategy and enterprise architecture. It has some significant technology debt and a clear roadmap to safely transition to that future state is required. As CIO, you will lead the IT Directorate to deliver that work program within defined budget and based on business priorities.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated ability to foster positive, strategic relationships with peers, customers and stakeholders and demonstrate a strong customer-focused approach.
  • Proven experience as a CIO or in a similar executive-level technology leadership role, taking a team from current state to desired future state in both technology, operating model and cultural change.
  • A strong track record of delivering technology services to a geographically dispersed organisation, balancing core service delivery and maintenance with customer centred transformation and change.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to align technology strategies with organisational goals, optimising technology investments through disciplined budget and program management.
  • Broad experience of leading large-scale business and IT projects to safe and successful delivery.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department's Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department's Partnership
  • Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes.
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and contemporary knowledge and experience in enterprise-level IT infrastructure, systems, applications and cyber security.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.
  • Hold (or be willing to obtain) a valid clearance to work with children (Working with Children Check).
