About the team:

The
Chemical and Biological Metrology Branch provides measurement standards such as certified reference materials. These include pure chemicals, gas standards, matrix materials and DNA standards. The branch also co-ordinates proficiency testing programs to assist laboratories assess their ongoing quality and performance. The branch houses three of Australia's national testing laboratories for anti-doping, forensic drugs and ultra-trace analysis.

The branch delivers services across all of these fields and carries out research and development to enhance our capabilities in line with national and international requirements.


The Chemical Reference Values team within NMI is a team of 14 scientists that develops high accuracy reference methods for use in the certification of matrix reference materials and for assignment of values to samples for proficiency tests.


We are seeking motivated individuals that have:

  • Extensive experience in reference material production and certification, measurement uncertainty and practical realization of traceability of chemical measurements
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in implementing and promoting innovation and continuous improvement and strategic input into work programs
  • High level communication and negotiation skills to allow the effective representation of NMI nationally and internationally
  • Demonstrated accountability for developing and mentoring employees
  • Commitment to achieving organisational goals while promoting a quality and safety culture
  • The demonstrated ability to consistently exhibit the NMI values of being adaptable, accountable, innovative, inclusive, influential and strategic

What you will do:

In this position you will report to the Manager of the Chemical Reference Values team and provide high level scientific input by:

  • Managing high level technical aspects of organic, inorganic and isotope ratio metrology projects, and proficiency testing programs, maintaining awareness of advancements in these fields and providing strategic input
  • Providing leadership and contribute to method development and validation of reference measurement procedures with respect to Organic analysis
  • Driving innovation and lead major procurement processes for equipment and instrumentation
  • Championing NMI as a centre of excellence nationally and internationally, particularly in the field of chemical metrology
  • Provisioning support and advice to the team and the broader NMI, mentoring staff and inputting into multidisciplinary projects
  • Actively contributing to a positive and healthy workplace promoting a culture of inclusivity that embraces collaboration, respect and values diversity


The role is also responsible for the technical oversight of the benchmarking of NMI's capabilities via comparisons with international metrology institutes.

The position contributes to the strategic direction of the team and planning of project resourcing.


Eligibility:

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.


Security Clearance:

This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for 18 months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Gazette.

Vaccination for Hepatitis A, B, and Tetanus is required for this position. NMI will provide vaccination for the successful applicant if required.
