About the Opportunity


The Principal Archivist provides leadership to the Archival Services team and is responsible for providing expert advice to support the efficient and effective management of records in the State's archival collection, and to guide agency/stakeholder practices, in accordance with the State Records Act 1997.


The Principal Archivist analyses and problem solves where practices are not clearly defined, and manages the development and implementation of new or revised archives management policies and procedures; including the interpretation of legislation, regulations and/or other guideline material relevant to the operations and functions of the archive and archival management.

The Principal Archivist will also be responsible for engagement with SA Government agencies and other stakeholders in order to advocate for, and on behalf of, State Records.

State Records is the archive for state and local Government agencies of South Australia for records of permanent value, and we are responsible for preserving and providing access to the archive.

We preserve records of enduring value and share the state's recorded history.


Special Conditions for Employment
Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested.

Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.

  • A degree in Information Management or Archives Administration, or a degree majoring in history, politics, anthropology, law or commerce, or another degree and eligible for professional membership of the Australian Society of Archivists.
