Grade 11/1- Fixed term Opportunity (until 2027)

Let's talk about the role
An exciting opportunity is available to join DCS as a Climate Change Risk Officer.

Reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer, this fixed term role (up to 4 years/ February 2027) is instrumental to the implementation of the NSW Climate Change Adaption Strategy.

Governance, Risk and Performance (GRP) is a Corporate Services business unit delivering strong governance risk management advisory and support services, promoting a governance culture, and optimising performance in DCS.


Passionate about sustainability and climate change, with experience providing strategic advice on complex risk issues to senior leaders, you are comfortable driving engagement at all levels to raise awareness of climate change impact, whilst ensuring key operational policies and project timelines are met.

Additionally, you will have most (if not all) of the following:

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Strong customercentric approach, putting the customer at the centre of everything you do
  • Demonstrated skills in building and collaborating with different teams to develop, implement and monitor delivery plans to ensure program outcomes are achieved
  • Comfortable working in an agile environment where innovation is required to launch new and longterm solutions
  • Ability to analyse technical information and translate it creatively to persuade different audiences
  • Demonstrated experience with reviewing systems, policies, and procedures to improve enterprise and operationallevel management
  • Ability to take ownership of the delivery of initiatives, imbedding innovative approaches to climate change risk management.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, advocating and influencing climate risk culture to a diverse range of people
  • Ability to communicate technical and complex information to a variety of audiences in different formats
  • Dedicated to maintaining uptodate knowledge of climate change standards, frameworks, policies, and initiatives relevant to your area of expertise
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/ or equivalent experience, with a focus in areas such as climate change, environmental management, risk management, organisational change, engineering or another related field

What might your day involve?

  • Lead and coordinate actions on behalf of the Cluster to meet the requirements of the NSW Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and other relevant operational policies and strategies.
  • Coordinate the Climate Risk Ready process within the cluster and with all cluster agencies.
  • Create and lead a cluster wide climate change risk management working group to embed climate change risk and adaptation strategies including identifying opportunities to prioritise and assess climate driven events, impacts and adaptation actions
  • Review systems, policies and procedures and develop recommendations to improve enterprise and operationallevel management of climate change risks and opportunities.
  • Lead delivery of initiatives that embed innovative approaches to climate change risk management into existing enterprise risk management frameworks, policies and procedures to respond to the impact on the Department's assets, services and objectives.
  • Lead engagement with senior leaders to increase awareness of climate change impacts and management responsibilities to build a positive climate risk management culture across the cluster.
  • Design and deliver initiatives to build internal skills, capabilities, knowledge, and capacity to implement climate risk operational plans, policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement strategies and tools for the continuous monitoring and evaluation of initiatives and enterpriselevel climate risks and opportunities.
  • Generate and present reports, briefings, and discussion papers to inform responses to climate risk into business and operational plans, policies and procedures that can be scaled across the cluster
  • Provide expert advice and information to stakeholders on emerging issues and present recommendations that contribute to the achievement of the Department's strategic objectives and priorities
