About the role:


This newly created Animal Ethics Officer role provides an excellent opportunity to join Florey's animal ethics office and have a significant impact in the field of animal ethics as well as supporting the research activities by providing high-level administrative and technical support to the Florey Animal Ethics Committee (AEC), Florey scientists and animal facility staff.

As Animal Ethics Officer, you will serve as secretary to one of Florey's AECs, directly report to the Senior Animal Ethics Officer, and assist with developing and implementing animal ethics policies, procedures, and training programs.


  • Provide administrative and technical support to the Florey Animal Ethics Committees
  • Assist the Senior Animal Ethics Officer with regulatory compliance requirements and in developing information resources and training programs related to animal ethics
  • Manage records, documentation, and reporting in accordance with relevant guidelines for both AEC and animal welfare
  • Support the collective vision and mission of the Florey through open and collaborative communication that promotes positive and respectful relationships

This position is a permanent, full-time time role.

The role attracts an annual salary offer ranging from Higher Education Worker Level 5-1 (HEW 5-1) $69,470 to Higher Education Worker Level 5-8 (HEW 5-8) $79,801, commensurate with experience.

About you:


  • Demonstrated highlevel administrative and office management skills
  • Experience working in an environment using animals for research
  • Working knowledge and basic understanding of the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and other relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with procedures used on animals in scientific research and experimental design
  • Capability to distil critical information from Animal Ethics Committee discussions and convert scientific language into 'plain English'
Experience with the below is desirable, but not essential:

  • Experience with Animal Ethics Committee work in Australia
  • Experience with the development and implementation of information resources and training programs related to animal ethics
