The Role

The Education and Career Support Program is designed to support young people from the time of cancer diagnosis until they re-connect with education or employment pathways.


Service Delivery

  • Provide specialised individual career development services that support young people to gain employment or engage successfully in education pathways.
  • Carry a caseload which may include young people with more complex needs and achieve positive outcomes for those individuals in their engagement with education and employment.
  • Engage young people in the program and in the development and implementation of their individual plans

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work alongside Canteen's Partnership team and with State Managers to develop and maintain strategic relationships that provide education or support pathways for clients.
  • Develop and manage relationships within treating hospitals for adolescent and young adult patients.
  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds efficiently and effectively.

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in Education, Vocation, Health, Social Science or related field.
  • Experience in Careers or Vocational support services
  • Experience in supporting young people to establish and achieve goals, including education and careerbased goals.
  • Eligibility for registration of a relevant professional registration board or professional membership of a relevant professional organisation.
  • Registration with Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) or other Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) member association (Desirable)
  • Hold a Graduate Certificate in Career Development endorsed by the CICA (Desirable)

Knowledge and Skill

  • Qualifications or relevant experience working in oncology or a related field is desirable.
  • Knowledge of State based Educational Institutions and systems, and relationships with key professionals and organisations.
  • A sound understanding of educational and vocational barriers encountered by children and young people who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness, including cancer.
  • Comprehensive case management skills in analysis and planning, including needs identification, service planning, service coordination, documentation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ability to engage with and relate to young people, anticipate needs, and to present information in a clear and logical way, and with confidence, to target groups.

  • Approachable, able to listen actively, friendly and professional.
  • High level of selfawareness, integrity, honesty and commitment.
  • Highly motivated, team player who contributes to maintaining an effective team that is focused on achieving against key performance indicators for the organisation.

Hours of Work: 3 days / 22.5 hours per week

  • Due to the nature of Canteen's work, you will be required to (very) occasionally work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and Canteen does have a Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave as agreed with the supervising manager.

Employment Expectations

  • Successfully complete and maintain a current National Police Check and Working with Child Check relevant to the individual's state jurisdiction.
  • Undergo an extensive screening process prior to appointment to guarantee the safety of all Canteen's stakeholders.
  • Provide at least two direct referees to ensure a successful reference check is completed.
  • Canteen employees are encouraged to have received the recommended doses of an approved COVID19 vaccine.
