Security Practices on Social Networks

Security practices on social networks are some of the most important things customers will have to check before registering and deciding to upload personal data and information.

Internet social networks are very popular places to meet and connect with other people who share similar interests. But Facebook, MySpace or Second Life might also pose serious threats to users when it comes to security. A lot of companies see social network web sites as a friendly place where they can establish contacts or advertise, hoping for new customers, buyers or sellers. Since a lot of people access such web sites from the comfort of their homes, they are easy to be lulled into a fake state of anonymity.

The lack of physical contact also lowers the natural defense of users, leading some newbies to disclosing personal information they would never reveal to someone they just met on the street.

Therefore, in order to stay safe on an Internet social network, you need to recognize such factors and work knowledgeably within a few simple rules.

It is very important to be discreet. According to Business Aspect, avoid typing any personal information into a profile web page or bulletin board. There is a chance you get exposed to unwanted visitors. This means personal address, phone number, work place, birth date and daily routines and schedules. It is highly recommend that you try to communicate mostly in generalities, rather than to reveal personal information that some people might use against you.

Internet social networks are full of both useful business information and even more useless disinformation. It might be wise to treat anything you find online with a high level of skepticism, whether it is news, gossip or tips.

Nobody likes a big mouth, that's for sure. However, the Internet has a funny way of releasing personal inhibitions. You can show off, you can hide and you can start under a new identity right away. So this is why some people use the Internet to release the negative energy and their frustration. Avoid ever typing anything online that can come back at you. This includes slander, outrageous claims, obscenity and insults. Be nice and professional. Always think twice before typing anything.

If you decide to upload a picture or a video to a social network web site, make sure it represents you in the best light. It is very important to remember that you can be anyone you want on the Internet. It's the same for everyone else. The manager you are chatting with in Spain can actually be a 15 years old kid from Australia. Until you can verify someone's real identity, never reveal personal or financial information.

Social network web sites are generally useful business tools, but only if approached with a correct amount of common sense and caution.

A common joke in the Internet world says that the Internet is the only place where men are men, women are men and under aged girls are FBI agents. It might be a joke, but it just couldn't express better what Internet became in our days. Therefore, security practices on social networks are the first things you need to take care of before exposing yourself.
