ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:


The Children's Programs Officer is responsible for undertaking projects and programs which contribute to the health and wellbeing of children and families in the Cumberland area.

This position will be held accountable for the successful delivery of key strategies, projects and programs across the following functions:


  • Contributing to the delivery and evaluation of the Cumberland Children and Families Strategy
  • Increasing awareness and availability of health and wellbeing programs for children and families across the Cumberland area.
  • Providing outdoor accessible physical environments for all children and families.
  • Increasing availability of information on services supporting children's health and wellbeing for local families.
  • Engaging children and families in actions which improve health and wellbeing outcomes which include recreation and mental health initiatives.

The successful applicant will require:


  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Sciences, Recreation, Humanities or qualifications showing relevant strengths e.g. child protection, community development or equivalent experience.
  • Valid Working with Children Check clearance.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the children and families sector and the needs, issues and legislation relating to children including child protection, risk management, responding to incidents and disclosures and child protection.
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships with service providers, agencies, community groups and other stakeholders to plan and deliver effective programs that respond to community identified needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in working with children including implementing child participation and childled approaches, and knowledge of health and wellbeing specifically the issues affecting children.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including sound knowledge and experience in planning, implementation and evaluation, and ability to multitask and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing and evaluating strategic projects.
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced customer service skills and a commitment to providing a superior customer experience with the ability to gain cooperation from a variety of stakeholders to achieve organisational objectives.
  • High level administrative and organisational skills, including attention to detail, ability to maintain accurate records and advanced skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to maintain accurate financial records and monitor expenditure.
  • Current Class C Driver's Licence.
  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willing to obtain).

Position information:

This is a term contract, full-time position, working a 70 hour fortnight, with access to Council's 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement.


This position will be located at the Merrylands Service Centre and may be required to work across any of Council's work locations, with frequent travel required across Council worksites.


Salary information:
The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award.

  • Grade 10 of the Cumberland Salary Structure with a salary range of $1,464.40 to $1,684.06 per week, plus 10.5% superannuation
  • The commencing salary will be negotiated, taking into consideration the successful applicant's qualifications, skills and experience related to the role
