The Opportunity


Under broad direction, the Discipline Manager (DM) - Buildings and Structures, leads and manages a team of engineering professionals and para-professionals delivering services to multidisciplinary road, rail, mining, industrial, urban and other infrastructure projects for NSW and across KBR Australia's operations.

KBR are looking to fill this role with a Building Services professional.

The DM plans, budgets, organises, and controls the New South Wales Buildings & Structures design team of approximately 15-20 people.

Key functions include the pastoral care for the team, acting as a technical discipline specialist (in your relevant discipline), development or review of designs and planning, mentoring, and performing direct work in significant projects, and overseeing project execution.


The DM negotiates critical and controversial issues arising within the team, organisation or project with other mid-level managers and engineers, mostly within but on occasion outside KBR.

The job role contributes directly to value creation through the performance of projects and the undertaking of business development in the relevant sector to service and source clients.

A large part of the role is mentoring and direction of more junior engineers and advising senior management.


Commensurate with the seniority of the position, it includes establishment of good relationships with clients, pursuit of opportunities, development of proposals, preparation of budgets and plans, management of stakeholders and interaction with regulatory authorities.

You will also manage small to medium projects and proposals as a "seller/doer". You may be asked to undertake other reasonable duties in line with the requirements of this role.

The Key Technical and Management Skill for this role:

  • Demonstrated practical record of managing teams of professionals
  • Broad competence and experience in the practice of the discipline of building services engineering in a consulting and project environment.
  • Ability to technically lead a multidisciplinary project engineering team to deliver major work packages for a large multidisciplinary project according to scope, budget and schedule
  • Ability to guide and coach more junior and midcareer engineers, designers and drafters in the preparation of models, designs, drawings and to undertake review of these drawings
  • Competence in preparing and reviewing reports and technical specifications
  • Ability to liaise with clients, statutory authorities and other consultants
  • Willingness to provide technical assistance and guidance to designers and less experienced engineers.
  • Proactively gathers lessons and opportunities for improvement that are integrated into client consultation and Discipline delivery
  • Evidence of strong client relationships within the Sydney buildings market will be considered favourably
