About the Business Unit
The First Law Officer and Policy (FLO) Team sits within the Integrity Policy and Performance business unit of the Integrity, Regulation and Legal Services group, and leads the delivery of legal policy advice and reform in relation to:

  • the Attorney-General's First Law Officer functions, and
- regulation of the legal profession.


The FLO Team's work in relation to the Attorney-General's First Law Officer functions is varied and includes, advising on petitions for mercy and the interjurisdictional transfer of prisoners for trial, and overseeing the management of requests from overseas courts for the taking of evidence and requests concerning the administration of charities.

The team is also responsible for the expungement scheme.


About the Role


The Legal Policy Officer works closely with two Senior Legal Policy Officers to deliver high-quality legal policy advice across all areas of the FLO Team's responsibilities.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertake research and develop and evaluate evidencebased policy proposals to improve the operation of legal profession regulation and deliver on government priorities.
  • Prepare advice to the Attorney-General and departmental executives on operational issues affecting legal profession regulators, including in relation to appointments, budget, subordinate legislation and legislative reform.
  • Prepare correspondence relating to the Attorney-General's First Law Officer functions and legal profession regulation.

About you

  • Legal policy skills with the ability to analyse complex issues and interpret legislation.
  • Proven ability to delivery good quality, concise, written and verbal advice.
  • Knowledge and experience of criminal or public law or regulation, or knowledge and experience of policy or legislative development and delivery.
