The Role

As the APS 6 -Communications Officer, you will generate targeted communication to Defence Legal Division (DLD) personnel and stakeholders on all aspects of the provision of Legal Services to the Commonwealth, entitled individuals, Practice of Law and the Business of Law.

You will report to the EL 1 Communications Manager and provide specialist advice on design, development and coordination of communication products and activities.


This will include hands-on content design for the DLD intranet and internal digital information sharing platforms, instructional material and staff communique.

Engaging with all areas of the Legal Practice to analyse information and identifying opportunities and risks will be form part of your regular duties.

You will also supervise the APS5 Web Manager to set priorities and manage workflows.


Building and sustaining effective relationships with stakeholders will be essential to achieve agreed outcomes and to ensure stakeholders can easily access reliable information.

You will work primarily from the team's Canberra-based offices at Campbell Park, Campbell ACT.

Defence Legal Technology, Data and Information (DLTDI) is part of Legal Practice Enablement (LPE) Branch, which is the backbone of Defence Legal in supporting and empowering officers to deliver quality legal services to the Australian Defence Force, the Minister for Defence and the Department of Defence.

DLTDI is a high performing, multidisciplinary team that embraces diversity, flexible work, career growth and development.

It has responsibility for providing Defence Legal with necessary tools, systems and processes to deliver a smooth legal service for Defence.


This includes:

  • Ensuring Defence Legal staff understand and use the technology that is available to them effectively
  • Promoting a culture of learning and informed decisionmaking
  • Managing information, records and data to improve decisionmaking, promote collaboration and increase efficiency
  • Systematically organising, capturing, storing and sharing information
  • Coordinating procurement, installation and maintenance of Defence Legal software, hardware and systems
  • Maintaining the security of Defence Legal technology, data and information.


We are seeking an experienced communication professional with a history of delivering successful communication campaigns yet has that extra skill (or passion to learn the skill) around content design.

Preferably, they will have experience in working within information management teams and/or technology projects.
