MHDA Statement of Intention

The intention of the NSLHD MHDA is to provide recovery-oriented, trauma informed services that are guided by evidence based practices and collaboration.

Coral Tree Family Service is a tertiary referral service for children with mental health problems.

The service provides treatment to referred children in the context of their family and conceptualises the family as the unit of treatment.

Families come from across NSW for planned 4 night stays with up to 3 families at a time being in residence.

Family Workers staff the residential family admissions program and provide the crucial residential 'in situ' mental health interventions that make our service unique.

Family workers act as agents of change, seeking to find opportunities for improved interactions in the 'here and now' of family life.

A main focus is on empowering parents/carers to find better ways of helping the children in their care. A respectful partnership with all family members is an essential prerequisite to achieving positive outcomes.

The role involves care coordination throughout a families contact with the service by liaising with allocated families and their referrers.

This central role involves preparing families for admission, organising the care required during their stay, providing therapeutic interventions with other members of the team during the admission, reporting back to referring agents following the stay, and providing some telephone follow up support to the family.
